So have been reading about Karma, and think it would be choice to get a product like this.

Like a 4g Hotspot but also connects to other WiFi networks when it gets into range, so you don't have to use the 4g Data all the time.

Anyone know of any products that are simiar that work in NZ and maybe even allow you to change SIM's.

I don't know about you, but a hotspot is a hotspot is a hotspot. (Tin foil hats out there yes I probably suspect some 'generic' labels will route your packets first before going to the destination)

If you are keen on a hotspot device, get one that has the largest battery capacity. Otherwise you will risk carrying those mobile battery chargers to supplement that look like colostomy bags

This specific one is a Sprint device - won't work in New Zealand really.

There was a discussion a few weeks back about a roaming device that is soon to hit New Zealand. Obviously you would need to find something from the local telcos to be affordable to use in country instead of overseas.

Both Vodafone and Spark offer WiFi hotspots but I don't recall any model that automatically connects to WiFi instead of mobile data all the time.

Here is the previous discussion about Skyroam, a device for travelers (not what you want, but give you an idea of what it is without the limitations of Sprint and soon to be available in NZ)

Why would you want to effectively "double hop" from your device to this router and then onto a public Wifi network, surely all you are doing is draining two batteries when you actually only need to use one?

Unless this thing has some built in Firewall to give you additional protection, why not simply connect you wifi device to the public Wifi?

(you are going to have to use your device and open a browser window for most free wifi in NZ to agree to T+C anywhy so why not just connect directly to the host.
