I'm a TelstraClear Cable user with a Linksys WRP400 for VoIP. I'd like to also have DD-WRT so a VPN can be shared between all computers in the house. Ideally I'd like a DD-WRT compatible wireless router that has one or two RJ11 voip ports on the back. Xnet/vfx Help Desk don't think these exist. I was hoping some of you know of one or use one working with Xnet/Vfx.

The alternative is getting a DD-WRT wireless N compatible router (suggestions welcome) and run the current WRP400 behind it as a certified device and use it only for the phone part. Thought I'd check what you suggest.

Forums covering this have comments made in 2010 so was wondering what I can do in 2012 using a single Router with DD-WRT support and VoIP if possible.

You're not going to get anything that supports DD-WRT and does VoIP since DD-WRT doesn't have a SIP stack.

Cisco/Linksys still make the best VoIP gear but have pretty much given up on integrated devices. My personal recommendation would be a Mikrotik router with an ATA/WRP400 behind it, but there is a learning curve with RouterOS but it's vastly more powerful than DD-WRT.

Thanks sbiddle. You're right it doesn't have to be DD-WRT of course. Any software/firmware that will allow a VPN to be shared will do. I have a LG Smart TV and Panasonic Blu-Ray player with Internet Access and hope to use a VPN to access overseas programs using e.g. Astrill. As I can't install a VPN on these it would need to be done via a VPN capable Router. If it had VoIP that would be one less device behind the TV - there are already 6.

Would the Mikrotik RB951-2n Wireless N Lite be a suitable Router to use that runs RouterOS and will this small router perform better than a DD-WRT Router like the Asus RT-N16.

The 951 is a nice little unit but the downside is that RouterOS has a learning curve, and you do face the risk of struggling to configure it. I love RouterOS, but for somebody who has little or no networking experience you will struggle to configure it.

If the Setup Guide and Winbox Console are not sufficient I won't take the risk. Do you have a VoIP setup using it accessing a VPN? Does it's performance surpass a dd-wrt router? Have others on Geekzone have experience with RouterOS?

I have had a look at Webfig, that looks like something I could handle. Does this come stock on most RouterOS devices (e.g. MikroTik 951, 751)?

It might, but it would be a very poor setup. You'll be adding well over 200ms of delay (delay on speech can be noticeable above 150ms) and you have no gaurantees of bandwidth or quality. You wouldn't want your voice traffic having to go the US and back.

Thanks sbiddle, it sounds to me that trying to get a VPN router with a Voip phone running behind it is not a good idea. I think I'll look at other ways of getting the LG Smart TV to access a VPN as I don't want to lose quality on the phone line. Appreciate you helpful comments.

Yes, on RouterOS this would not be a problem. You just add a route to the firewall to push the 2Talk traffic at the 2Talk servers directly rather than at the VPN tunnel.

You don't have to send all the traffic to the VPN tunnel in RouterOS, don't know about DD-WRT sorry - DV can you comment?

oh is that all we're doing... sorry, didn't read this properly.

Ok, so you terminate the vpn on RouterOS, then you just direct all traffic from the TV to the VPN.

So, you need to give the TV a static IP so we know where it is and it stays there (or set up a mac based dhcp rule or use the tv's host name, but we just need to know it's the tv calling) and then you just set up a route for that static IP traffic to all head to the net via the vpn while the rest goes off in what ever direction (the default route).

DD-Wrt has Milkfish SIP Router setup. Actually been reading up about it. Good tutorials on settings, etc.

The OP wants a device with VoIP hardware capabilities - Milkfish is simply a small SIP proxy.
