Hi all
I am seriously considering moving from Telecom phone and internet to Snap naked broadband. For the last couple of years I have used 2talk for one line and for the last year this has been going without any problems.
So, if I would do that move, how would I get the phone numbers listed in the phone book?
How is Snap's service?
Would be nice to hear some comments?

Thanks

im on naked with Snap and use there VOIP service with a Fritzbox that i plug my phone into and i have never had a problem with the setup in the 2 months i have used it, in fact i cant tell the difference between Voip and POTS. The fritzbox keeps track of incoming, outgoing, and missed calls and i use the telephone book in the fritzbox to save numbers i want and i can just click on them to dial the number. Plus i get call waiting, caller id and an answer phone which sends me an email when a message is there. Overall as a first time VOIP user i wish i did it earlier and again Snap have been brilliant in setting it up , they did it all by remote, and are really good in changing things if they don t quite work. eg Today they increased the length of rings before the answer phone kicks in.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Very easy to get land line number listed on White pages with 2 talk. Once you are up and running just send 2talk a support ticket asking for a white pages listing and giving the name , address and number ... in a day or so it will be on 018 and when the new book comes out it will be there. I have done 2 of these for myself and helped a friend as well ... all went without a glitch. I use 2talk on vodafone naked at my home and 2talk on Ultimate RBI (3G VF mobile with a yagi) at a rural location and I am very pleased.

Thanks guys/ladies
As I said the 2talk has been working perfectly for the last year. Also the whole family has mobiles and so the need for a standard-line phone isn't really there. Except for emergency and more exactly the location issue. Not sure if mobiles show the location in emergency calls?
allstar1; How much did the white pages listing cost you over the 2talk?

Everybody who has a phone number is entitled to one free white pages listing. It's either up to you to contact White Pages directly or ask your provider to do this on your behalf.

sbiddle, thanks for clarifying that. What is the situation with mobile(smart) phones? Can those be located(geographicaly) in 111 calls?
I'm just keen to go all the way with voip and would be nice to know what I have to expect with things like emergency.

There is no E911 style service in NZ for mobile phones.

I don't believe we have mobile location services integrated with 111 in NZ yet.

I've done the exact same thing recently. Moved my broadband and PSTN home line to Snap and then ported my number out to 2talk which left me on naked ADSL. I then upgraded to VDSL.

Because 2talk pre-provision you a few hours before the port, you can actually set it up on your ATA (Fritz!Box here) and when the PSTN connection dialtone goes, you'll just start receiving calls on the 2talk line.

Doing it that way meant I had literally zero down time for our landline.

I could just have easily used Snap's VoIP service but I fundamentally like the idea of my phone line being separate from my ISP in the same way as my email is.

Ring the Snap team, explain what you're trying to do and they'll take care of you. Honestly, their customer service kicks serious butt and their network performance has been great. The all-you-can-eat nights are great too.. Guess when I signed up to Crashplan and started backing up my PCs ;)

Thanks mattgreen
I could not find the all-you-can-eat rules as to what time of the day and any other rules apply on their website? As a matter of principal I have separate email and and also stay with 2talk.
Only concerns is emergency and line maintenance, the later I'm unsure who and how it gets sorted?

If you care about emergency location details you'll have to keep a PSTN line which means installing a master splitter ($400 if Chorus do it), or use Open VFX rather than 2talk as they're the only VoIP provider that are updating the location database.

In reality the first thing you should give once connected to the police/fire/ambulance call centre is your address. Even if they get location details they will check this first. In the end we decided it just wasn't that important as chances are we'd be calling from our mobiles anyway.

Not sure if Snap can offer line maintenance. Personally I'd save the money by skipping it. Over a 10 year period you will save more than you will spend if you need to get someone reasonable to do any repairs. With naked DSL you only need (want) the one jack connected so lowers the amount of wiring to worry about anyway.
