Currently have a DVA-G3670B and internal network.
Have a mail server and 3cx exchange with softphones on our PC's for VOIP plus a couple plugged into router as backup.

Everything works OK except
QOS for phones are not good under heavy internet connection (someone else using a VPN to get files etc)
ADSL data slows badly when others off our exchange kids get home in the late afternoon and VOIP starts getting very poor.

I have been thinking of putting in a wireless connection (we are rural in the waikato) for the phones and to use it as backup if adsl fails (long piece of wire from our house to the exchange that regularly gets lightning damage

)

Looking for ideas and suggestions please?

My thinking is

A seperate 3G router (Telecom dongle) with wireless N running on a different internal IP address that we use for VOIP connection. What are good devices and what dongles do people have experience with that work? Need at least one LAN wired connection on it.

If ADSL fails we just turn on the laptops and connect to second SSID it is running to stay working.

As all the servers are virtual i could setup a second connection on each one that used the second gateway ip address so they could have access.

This way VOIP is always via the 3G plus we can use it whebver the adsl fails but changeover is not automatic.

Other ideas?

I'd do some testing with VoIP over 3G before you commit to any big purchases. VoIP over 3G can be a bit hit and miss, depending on a number of factors (Latency, Cell load and breathing, tower backhaul and capacity, interference etc etc)

Please post your ADSL stats (particularly your sync rates, as well as a speedtest).

If you have a common wiring issue, you could be choking your upstream rate needlessly, and that could be whats killing your VoIP.

If you decide to go with either I would say use pfsense to do the routing.
You can have multiple LAN's and then using firewall rules let the VoIP LAN use only one WAN connection and then your PC LAN can be balanced between the 2 WAN connections. Or even just have one LAN that is load balanced between the two WANs and just set static addressing for your VoIP devices and, again, just use firewall rules. All you need is an old PC with a few NICs and you are away laughing.
Setting up load balancing also lets automatic fail-over happen if the ADSL was to go down.

What part of the Waikato are you in? A RBI wireless solution may help, especially if you are on a Conklin that won't be upgraded for a while.

We have good RBI here, two new towers no more than 5k's away and line of sight.
Rang local vodafone rep but nothing has happened.

Also it is $100 per month for 5GB.

My thoughts are i may get better value got 3G prepay or even post pay for the amount of use.

It is only two VOIP phones in use for a couple of hours a day max.

Also i end up owning any of the gear and could always use it at other locations.

Any ideas of other RBI providers?

can you explain what the costs of an RBI install are? would also love to know why the monthlys are so high also, guess that is a question for someone else tho.

Check out www.ultimatebroadband.co.nz
I am their installer / dealer for Waikato and Auckland. The costs for the install cover 3G router (RRP $499), yagi antenna kit, labour etc. If we charged full price, cost would be around $800+
As for monthly cost, this will always be higher than fixed line as there is only finite capacity in the airways, but certainly still cheaper and better than satellite.
Our plans start at $75 monthly for 5GB.

RBI is a regulated product, so wholesale costing is set, and I think was done back when 10GB was more than enough data for most users.

To a certain extent I agree, but this is early days and I'm sure this will change over time. From other rural options I have seen out there, it is certainly a step up from other offerings. E.G. Be migrating a few customers from Orcon rural, and for about the same monthly cost they are getting more data and 10-20x the speed.

Certainly not, unlike fixed line dsl where they can flick you a cheap sub $100 router and a few filters; the wireless kit costs a lot more. We do the basic install for $399 on 24 month term, Vodafone do a cheaper upfront install, but you end up paying more over the term of contract. We also have a few more options and higher quality antenna kit.
