Im helping someone out with an issue he is having with his Grandstream GXP-1405 phone where the phone works when plugged into a TP-Link switch but when plugged into a D-Link DGS-105 switch it fails to connect.

Anyone know of any issues with this switch that may be preventing it from connecting. The phones and the computer network exist on the same cable just under different subnets(No vlans).
He can get his computer to connect via this switch but not the phone.

Looking at the switch specs from what I can tell it should work.

Any ideas before I tell him to go and get a TP-Link 5Port switch instead?

Thanks

Geoff E

When you say the phone "won't connect", do you mean it won't register to the SIP server, or do you mean it's not gettingan IP address from the DHCP server, or do you mean it doesn't show any low-level ethernet link at all?

Check things in this order:

- Do I have a link LED on the switch?
- Do I have a IP address from DHCP on the phone (use the phone UI to check)
- Is the IP in the expected subnet range? (ie not a link-local self-assigned 169.254 style address)

Assuming the above are all OK then I'd be logging into the phone's web UI and triggering a packet capture to determine why the connection is failing. But check those basics first.

Phones are on static addresses with the DHCP server for there range turned off.

There is a link light on the switch.

OK in that case I'd be logging into the phone from a computer on the same switch & subnet and using the packet-capture feature to grab a trace of the failed registration.

I'm pretty sure the Grandstream phones have this feature and if you can upload a trace then it will be easy to see which part is failing.

Hope this helps :)

(also happy to look at a trace if you capture one and upload it)

Are the 2 subnets the same with the same default gateway and DNS etc?

geocom: Nope different gateways different dns

So in that case, the Phones with Static IP's will not connect on a network with a different default gateway, as I pointed out before

There are 2 routers each with an internet connection

192.168.1.1 DHCP
&
192.168.5.1

Phones have the default gateway and dns and ip address setup to talk with 192.168.5.1

The computers connect to 192.168.1.1 through the DHCP lease.

There is no blocking between the 2 networks. It is just in place to increase the available bandwidth for the phones

Works fine with the current setup does not work with the d-link switch in fact he can unplug from the switch and plug into a tp-link switch and it will work.

That's the problem then.

There's no arrow between the D-Link and the internet!

I think I may just get him to change out the switch will most likely sort out the issue and will be cheaper than me trying to sort it out.

Its odd I changed the IP on the computer to the .5 range I can ping all the other phones I cannot ping the phone that is on that switch at all and the settings on the phone look correct.

I don't know if it is just me but I have always had issues with the D-Link stuff

Are you sure the D=Link isn't smart (I.e. Dropping non 192.168.1.x traffic)?

Don't know if it is I cannot see anywhere that would say it is. He ended up buying it in the first place, just been trying to sort it out. Gave him a link for a TP-Link switch that I know works as they are what is currently running in there. That will most likely sort it out.
