I use skypeout to call landlines from my iPhone when I'm in wifi. More recently I got the 2talk app and have been trying it out. I went into the advanced settings and have chosen the higher quality voice codecs (sorry can't remember to quote the g###). However everyone I have tried calling has said the line sounds weird, and I'm loathed to keep using it. I've tried it once over 3g and the lag is plain awful. Can anyone suggest that I can expect better?
I find quality over skypeout is perfectly acceptable, maybe has a lower bandwidth requirement?
As an aside I can no longer log into 2talk live, using correct password and ph no it always says login failed.
Should I keep persisting with 2talk? I can't skypeout on 3g, otherwise it'd be a no brainer to stick with skype.

How are you doing it over 3G?
I've had Skype conversations with people who were using Vodafone 3G and it was fine.

Are you going via Bluetooth to a Mobile, or using a 3G card directly in the laptop or...?

I would chase down your Skype issues first, it should "just work"

VoIP over 3G works fine however there are no guarantees of quality and will also be quality issues if you try while mobile due to the massive jitter during cellsite handovers.

Over a good connection 2talk should offer better quality than Skype for calls.

I've used 2talk with SipDroid on my Android phone and it worked fine provided I had good 3G coverage *continuously*.....which isn't likely if you're moving around as the call progresses. But if you're in a good spot, then the calls seem to work fine.

You only get a limited number of minutes on a free acount, so perhaps you've used up your minutes.

I used 2talk as well on my iphone and it wirks great on 3g. This is because im using g729 codec which uses low bandwidth. Btw im using acrobits siphpne. Great app! Higly recommendef. You can even register multiple sip accounts like gizmo.

Thanks guys for your responses. It's ironic that the day after I posted, Skype released a new version of their app for iPhone that allows use over 3G! Works just fine!
Once 2talk sort out my account so I can log in to the live page, I'll try the g729 codec. I've also been looking at the acrobits softfone, I see it supposedly supports Bluetooth, can you confirm this works?
