Currently on Telecom's 'BigTime'. Thinking about switching to Slingshot for better performance and going about using their iTalk. As I live in a flat I guess it would be easier to get an ATA and just keep on using the regular phone (so as not to confuse anyone). So my questions are:
- What are Slingshots speeds like (In Hamilton)
- How does iTalk compare to say 2Talk or whatever?
- Go with the Linksys ATA? (I'd rather not, there are cheaper options)\

Thanks

Linksys ATA's are reliable rock solid units, particularly the 2102's.

If you're thinking of a Grandstream ATA because they're cheap on Trademe you'll get what you pay for.

Unfortunately no 2102's on Trademe right now, was considering getting this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Computers/Networking-modems/Modems/auction-301065891.htm

Or this seems to be the all-in-one solution

(although I already have a netgear modem/router/wirelessG solution)

SPA 3000's are a very old devices now and have been obsolete for around 3 years since they were replaced by the SPA3102. They are an OK unit as an ATA but do have some echo issues, particularly if trying to use the FXO port for connecting to a analogue PSTN line.

If you want an all in one unit I highly recommend the new Cisco SRP527 but you'll still probably struggle to find stock of these for a reasonable price as they are a new unit.

I brought a WRTP54G all-in-one and mine was pretty unstable as a wireless router (kept restarting) however the ATA side is fine, but if I could go back I would have just brought a standalone ATA for sure, as for which ATA is best well looks like sbiddles got that one covered. Standalone ATA is most likely cheaper as you already have a wireless router.
I use iTalk on Telstraclear cable and its works fine, however I cant comment on competitors as I have not had any experience with them.

Is VOIP quality good? and easy to configure the device?

Haven't switched over to slingshot just yet, one of my flatmates wants to wait till uni holidays (we just finished them then I received the letter from telecom). The device was easy enough to configure though (once I sorted out what its IP was) I then just followed sbiddle's instructions for configuration on his blog http://www.geekzone.co.nz/sbiddle/7208.

But I haven't actually got the VOIP working yet as I need to switch over to slingshot first.
