Hi there,

I'm using telecom 40G ADSL and land line service. Would like to move to NDSL + 2Talk VOIP.

I had look those NDSL plans, like Slingshot, Kiwilink etc..., they all looks quite expensive and don't have much data.

could some help here to get a good provider please. Cheers,

Alvin

Thats because telecom wholesale charge the ISPs so much for the naked DSL circuit, since its not regulated like a wholesaled PSTN line is.

Could that be why telecom are so resistant to selling a naked DSL product? That would mean a retail minus pricing would probably me ruled on for the other ISPs buying ports..

I use worldexchange for my NDSL. I choose the slightly higher price option which means it's about $1.50 per gig during peak times (8am to 2am) then during offpeak (2am to 8am) you get 75gig free. The package is that you pay for what you use and it includes the VOIP in the priice ($69.95pm).

The other option is $1.02 per gig with no off peak time and does not include the 75gig of off peak data.

Ultimately it depends on whether you can justify the cost but for me i spend approximately $80 - $90pm including data and tolls. FOr that i get about 70 - 90 gig. Dependant on me being patient and downloading over night in the offpeak time.

As for the service and quality I have no major complaints and am generally happy with the service.

Naked ADSL is part of Telecom wholesale's regulated (by the commerce commision) product offerings (UBS, UBA EUBA etc) so the statement above by richms is not correct.

Telecom don't offer naked adsl directly because it makes no business sense for them to do so at all when they have a nationwide existing pots network.

Now..

A naked ADSL connection with 40GB of data will cost you around ~$110 /month with Xnet, Snap or Maxnet.

A voip account with 2talk, italk or Xnet costs around $10-20/month.

Telecom Total Home Lite + Pro (40GB) costs $120 /month.

You'll notice it works out about the same price for standard adsl + pots vs naked adsl + voip.. this is not really surprising at all.

The real question is why aren't LLU isp's like Orcon, Slingshot, Vodafone and Telstra with their own gear in exchanges offering better priced naked adsl?

You can go Purple+ with Orcon, add-on 25GB for $25 (Total = 50GB) and then a VoIP line with 2talk for $7 (Without calls). Costs you $111.95

Or, if you were to use Xnet's VFX line, it's $116.20

We use SNAP 10GB ndsl plan ($70) & 2talk $15 plan which covers all our tolls.
Very rarely I'll buy an extra data block, but most months we scrape in under 10gig (shocking for someone on GZ to admit to under 10GB I Know! I use work connection for large downloads).

Yes, that's what i realized as well. in this case, what's the point we are chaging from landline to Naked ADSL + Voip?

Well you get extra things with VoIP you wouldn't with a landline:
3-way calling
Voicemail
Call Waiting
Caller ID
Better rates

Hunt around ;)

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Add to that:

Anonymous call rejection,
ability to have 2 or more calls at once on different phones
remote dialtone
callback
call transfer (sometimes, when the ATA cooperates)
IVR
can put asterisk on it to annoy telemarketers with crap hold music.
can take softphone anywhere and take my calls with me.

Join up to a free 2talk and have a play with the portal at what you can just do on their system and then you will see why having a telecom PSTN line is so lame and expensive in comparison.

Edit: and call recording. Thats saved my arse many times.

I think it's fair to mention if your adsl/isp connection is down you can't receive calls via voip (apart from redirecting to mobile or having it go to voicemail).

POTS landlines are very reliable in NZ.

Not just that, but if your connection is overloaded, such as from streaming video, torrents etc, then it'll be poor quality
If you're on an overloaded exchange, again, same deal
If you've got a crappy router it may not work at all in the first place, or it may overheat and die mid-call.

Most of which is avoided by doing a little homework and making sure you're on ADSL2+ (Generally speaking) and then ensuring you don't have a cheap-as router, even ISP-supplied.

And at the end of it, its just a voice call so doesnt really matter if it doesnt work.

Potentially if you're a home user, it's not a buggy, just restart your router and make your call.

In the business world time = money. Especially if its your Sales line that's down...

Slingshot is wholesaling Voda's gear though (which is good) but they have no deals with Chorus themselves (their helpdesk dont even know what is UCLL). Since NDSL is only about 10% cheaper to provide and leaves the provider with an extra type of line card to populate, the prices being offered seem about right. Remember that all this LLU investment into Telecom's local loop, including Chorus for install and colocation costs, has to be paid off before the copper loop becomes obsolete. Unfortunately NZ jumped on the LLU bandwagon 5 years too late, and many unbundled users will switch back to wholesale UBA as they are cabinetised, and leased lines will likely be the first to move to fibre. Profits probably not under threat but there might not be much room to drop prices either, at least until FTTP kicks in and Chorus get all competitive on us.

I think UBA is a bit more flexible than an explicitly regulated product (its more of a standard than a designated product). The regulation just allows ComCom to define standard minimum terms as a kind of benchmark: the "UBA Standard Terms Determination". EUBA appears to be a commercial product resulting from this flexibility. I could be wrong -- ComCom has been more proactive on UBA than it ever was on the original 256k UBS and is now allowed to initiate investigations on its own, as it did with mobile termination rates.

Time to find a new industry!
