Hi guys just wondering where I can purchase an ata to use on 2talk, was hoping for something along the lines of a linksys spa 2012 (heard there better than pap2t), however i was wanting to keep under the $130 mark if possible, any suggestions

Thanks in advanced

A quick look at some of the stores and these are unconfigured and under your $130 mark

The xnet ones are not locked, **** and then reset on the keypad is all you need to do to get them back to default, otherwise take out the URL before letting them go on the internet.

The VFX units are not locked, they are merely preconfigured to access the VFX provisioning URL.  There is nothing to stop you using these units with any VoIP provider.

Since 2talk don't provide any auto provisioning all configuration is up to you. VFX's auto provisioning has you up and running with all the correct settings in under a minute.

As both richms and sbiddle have already noted, Xnet hardware is not locked. This is in contrast to some units imported from overseas  (and sometimes on Trademe). Depending on the exact device, you can either press the reset button, or dial in to it to reset all the settings.

I'm leaning toward 2talk, would I buy the one configured for xnet then just change the settings a bit, or just configure it from scratch?

Also, some of the "unlocked" ones on ebay have their eeprom duplicated out of other hardware to unlock them, so they have the same mac address which means that you cant use more than one on a lan, and autoprovision which is based on the mac address is broken since the one on the bottom of the unit is not what it uses, and if someone else already has one of the clone jobs, then you would get their settings...

There is only one setting on the xnet configured one that I looked at, which was the provisioning URL, the device requests that and gets a whole lot of settings and I think firmware updates applied.

connect to it without internet, remove the URL and you have a non configured one.

No reason to pay more for one with the xnet config, I recall they were cheaper for a while when ATA's cost a hell of a lot more.

Agree, don't buy used. And PAP2T-NA will definitely not work (the -NA part). No issues at all if XNet pre-configured (which is just the 1 line URL you would manually enter otherwise to connect to their service). They actually want people to compare their product quality with the others so you can see for yourself their service is the best.

My only relation to XNet is a long term satisfied customer.

If you want to do fax, or attempt any analogue modem, then get one of the SPA models and not the PAP2T.  It supports better CODECs.

Great thanks for all the feed back. Now that I know there not locked I shouldn't have any problem at all.

Thanks again

What's the issue with buying used?  A factory reset, and it's back to its original settings.

Two main reasons.
1) Statement by Richms regarding counterfeit product.  NZ is small, but there are still conmen targeting this island.
2) A used device is old.  I've had a number of power adapters of various devices fail because capacitors dry out, and that's device I've bought new.  Some products (mainly modems and WiFi devices) have a short life because of elevated temperature.

Taking into account the minimal saving on these devices by buying used, and if you are on nDSL like us it is not worth messing around with hardware of unknown history, I'd buy new unless the one I want is not available anywhere.

And looking at what a damn SPA-9000 sold for on trademe recently, it seems that some people will bid things up to way over what they are worth in the used market.
