Hi,

i am going oversea for more than a month, dose anyone know if i can use 2talk in another country?

Yes, no problem with that. Just take your ATA with you and plug it into a broadband connection.

Nice, thanks for the prop response, dose this mean i can actually set up another 2talk account for my family oversea and we can call each other for free?? like skype..either soft phone or with ATA..

There are business customers that do exactly that, take VoIP with them overseas. Not supposed to, can cause lots of trouble for instance if you dial 111, but it does work. (I'm not a business customer though.)

I signed up for 2talk last weekend. During thee signup I got to a page that asked me for my address but advised I only need to put that in if I am based in NZ.
I left it out (even though I am in NZ) and completed sign up successfully.

Sbiddle or maverick will be able to eloborate on the NAD rules which are available here: http://www.nad.org.nz but suffice to say an Auckland number is "supposed" to only be allocated to an Auckland address. I haven't read them but from memory I think XNET with VFX sticks to the NAD but 2talk don't.

XNet sticks to the rules (so you can expect them to give you a good service also ;-). You are not supposed to move your ATA. As far as I know 2Talk has always ignored that rule, (so do you trust them to give you a good service?).

You can never have enough Volvos!

2Talk are known for having a fairly decent VoIP platform. As to whether they have good service or not - no idea.

I have never had any trouble with 2talks platform. Their customer service can be iffy at times but as long as you can "self-solve" your voip problems (hardware issues) their voip platform seems rock solid.

I'm sure 2Talk has a good platform. My comments were ethical rather than technical, but I am biased towards XNet as I am a very long time satisfied customer.

2talk may have ignored the NAD in the past, but more recently they have made sure that numbers are being kept in the correct region. (based on my experience in trying to port numbers). That being said, I do know of someone in Europe who uses a 2talk number, complete with ATA, so they can call their family for free back here in NZ.

And the end of the day geographic numbers are supposed to be allocated and used only with the LCA and interconnected within the LICA that they belong to.

With VoIP this becomes a lot easier to "get around" than it did in the PSTN days and one can argue guidelines need to be updated to reflect the fact a VoIP line can be used from anywhere.

At the end of the day however an important part of any fixed line replacement is the ability to make emergency calls. The first TCF Emergency Services calling code has recommended that stickers be placed on phones from VoIP providers that aren't compliant with this code which includes the provider maintain accurate location data.

Get an 028 non-geographic number then. I can't see how this is a problem. I have two 2talk numbers set up so I can call my family when I am travelling overseas. I also have VoIP accounts with foreign providers to make calls in their particular country. What "rule" does this break?

Forget carting an ATA around. Use a softphone.
