Hi Guys ...
               Well here we go .... Im very keen to get naked broadband and VOIP saving us around $40pm what im wanting to know is ...

1/ which ISP to use ?

2/ Which VOIP to use

3/ we have a cordless phone etc and would still like to be able to use it { with VOIP }

4/ will having VOIP mean the the PC needs to be on all the time { please forgive my silly question if it is one ! }

currently we have the following set up ....

ISP is Telstraclear on there ADSL2+ network we are only 500m from the exchange with download speeds of 6-8megs per second on a 10Gig Capped plan and every month we are so close to going over it .

I have a wireless Belkin f5d8636-4v1 router which I would love to keep .I have read a little about Xnet seems good ... but really need people who have been there and done that and have it working .

We would make 2-3 Tolls call a month to the one number so to me its not worth having a phoneline

I understand I will need an ATA adaptor for my phone to work etc ??.

I look forward to hearing from everyone and thanks again for all your help .

Cheers
Andrew W {AKA veryshort}

Best quality VoIP you will get from XNet, they provide Fibre to the Home VoIP services to Telecom (as far as I know). As an ISP they are very competent technical people, but like virtually all non-Telecom ISPs they do have some speed issues during peak times. So if your main thing is gaming or heavy download, then consider other ISPs (you can still use XNet VoIP). Also they will act on accusations of illegal movies/music download. Not a problem for me, but be aware if that is you.

All phones will work, but some show extra/less zeros at the start of caller ID and also my not show the correct time (if phone has that feature).

PC is not involved. You need specific hardware to connect your phone and your network together. More info on the XNet home page. XNet requires specific hardware, other companies allows more options/choice but you also get less reliable service as they do not know your hardware so can not help when things go wrong.

You can never have enough Volvos!

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I have been using VOIP at home with Naked DSL from Vodafone. They offer a nice discount if you have an 'on account' mobile with them too. Have used a range of VOIP providers (XNet, 2talk and iTalk) and of them has been fine for home use - just depends on what plan suits you and what hardware you wish to use.

BTW... Vodafone are currently offering a free ADSL/Wi-Fi 802.11n router if you sign with them for Naked DSL for 12-months. This router just happens to have 2-VOIP ports which you can plug in an existing analog handset into (such as your current cordless). You'll need a VOIP provider for this - I have tested this router so far with 2talk and had positive results.

There is a seperate thread on the VF forum with more details...

Thanks guys for your help , I have another stupid question ..... are you charged to received calls or are you only charged for calls you make ? ....Im also after what other people have found to work well in terms of combinations ...ie which isp and VOIP provider ... Im leaning toward vodafone as we dont have that many options here in NZ for naked BB . im also starting to thing that it might not be worth my while switching to VOIP .Currently we are spending around $90-$100 a month on phone and BB with a 10Gig Limit and maybe 1-2 toll calls .

Love to hear from other who have switched and found a saving ... one thing I do like ... is that with VOIP most of all the smart phone functions are free .... eg caller ID etc .

Cheers

Moved to Xnet Fusion, and only using 2-3GB / month, so total bill is under $75.

Local calls are free. Toll calls to most places I want to call are 5c/min. Voice traffic through your connection is also not counted in your data usage, unlike most ISPs.

Add to that XNet charge you only for the data you use, not for your data cap. My cap is currently set to 10GB (was 5GB until wife found an on-line game Imperial Warfare...) and up to now have always used around 3GB per month so paid only ~$3 for data.

XNet also does not add e-mails (and attachments) to data usage. They also do not add Windows Update to your data usage. And a few other things which are data local to their network.

Little know ISP, but great. They do not advertise yet they are doing well and been around for ages. Started as World Exchange toll services.

hmmmm makes for some interesting research .... if I join Xnet { which I would like to based on ppls opinions here as a good provider } the cost is ...

$69.90pm for BB and VOIP plus what ever I use on data transfer at the moment would be 10G { $10} so the total is $79.90 + toll calls outside of my local calling area .

im now looking at the following make up ....

Vodafone naked BB including 30Gigs for $65pm and then adding a Xnet VFX connection for $11.50pm total being $75pm not too bad

hmmm we dont have a lot of choice in this country do we .....hahaha
