Probably not... It's looking at the hardware, not if it's on or not.

so suggestions? as to why it says its not compatible...but on 2nd page says it is..with the Bluetooth issues?

I recently upgraded the last of my Windows 7 PCs to Windows 10.

I downloaded the update software from the Microsoft website when prompted, and got this message when I ran it:

Microsoft describes itself as an "Unknown Publisher"

(the software worked perfectly)

Yup, fresh install should do well for everything and, unless you use the laptop's Bluetooth (and who does?) then losing it to become an "unknown device" wouldn't be an issue anyway. It won't stop Windows working, but win10 may stop IT working.

If it is on the Toshiba list then it is probably ok to upgrade.

Imo there is no compelling reason to do it. You will probably replace the laptop long before windows 8 is obsolete/unsupported.

The only reason to do it is getting the latest operating system for free. Personally I can't think of a reason to do it. Maybe resale value if you replace frequently?

Maybe just me, but I have found nothing I like in windows 10 that wasn't in 8.1. If anything I think it's worse. It now takes three clicks to connect to a vpn - used to just be one! The "Settings" section is plain annoying. The start menu is nice and easily customised, but classic shell with windows 8.1 was still just fine.

Yes, classic she'll can 'fix' some irritations of Win8 but Win10 is the MS 'fix' for several issues that users had with 8/8.1...

In reality I'd say W10 is effectively w8.2 no reason not to get the refinements and tweaks that MS has made to 'fix' and improve 8.1, and it's a free upgrade.

To the OP, 'fresh install' and 'iso' are just terms to say do the 'new install' not 'upgrade' as ALL brands of laptop are notorious for having 'bloatware' (aka cr$pware) installed and this is the easiest way to get a cleaner/faster operating machine. A 'Fresh Install' will effectively give you that brand new machine feel, as non of the random junk they (and maybe you) installed will remain, so you only reinstall the programs (apps) you still find useful.

If you wish to go this route, be sure you still have all the software installs or keys/serials for the things you want to put back on, and then download the 'USB install" version of Win10 from Microsoft directly here:

There are no other caveats really, though you also have a choice during install to 'multi boot' if you have the free hard drive space and are nervous of losing things. This just adds a selection during boot up that lets you choose your old w8.1 or new W10 desktop before the login screen, and effectively make your PC into 2 operating systems, either one at a time.

Microsoft will add new features to Windows 10 in time. Not much or nothing will be added to 8.1.

It's a relatively new machine and it officially supports win 10 so probably a good time to do it while it's free.

don't think ill be doing a fresh instsall sounds to complicated,.,so when it says my machine cos of Bluetooth issues,,not compatible...what do I do...I deleted..Bluetooth from machine but still says in compatible.. if I do get win10 from the Microsoft site..i just want my pc same as I have it now programmes etc..

Deleting or disabling Bluetooth in device manager will not change this.

Can you name your exact model Toshiba from the list?

From there it is easier to provide the correct method for that model.

Or just try the multi boot option I mentioned above? This gives the option of trying it out while retaining your complete 8.1 install 'as is' and seeing if you like w10.

As long as you have 50-100 gb spare, no worries and easy enough...?
