The million dollar question, are we going to see Microsoft gradually replace the Control Panel, File Explorer, Windows Management Console and friends with either 'modern' equivalents or at least ones with GUI's that properly scale on High-DPI screens?

I am guessing you are right, purely on the basis of why would you release it to insiders differently to how you will roll it out to the rest of the consumers. It would be nice to get a definite answer though :)

The Q4 2015 update will be a full in-place upgrade (OS swap).

Future updates will switch to a more servicing-oriented approach.

You will be able to go directly from Windows 7/8/8.1 to the Q4 2015 or other future upgrades using a single in-place upgrade (same ~3GB size).

That sounds good, so bearing in mind the various teething problems described in this thread, would it pay people who haven't yet upgraded to wait until the Q4 2015 upgrade is released? I realise there is a certain challenge in installing a new operating system, but if you don't enjoy, or don't have time to sort out the initial bugs, why install Windows 10 now?

Anyone have the problem where Facebook will only load the first one or two stories in newsfeed with Win 10? This seems to be browser and DNS independent, and doesn't get fixed with a DNS cache flush. There are a few reports of it on the internet but no firm solution.

I had an interesting new-install experience last week. (Or was that near-death? Whatever)
A friend's PC shat itself, the obvious cause a fried CPU. 5 year old PC that was slow 5 years ago so I talked her into buying a basic box and a W10 licence but she needed some help installing it.
W10 is the first MS OS I have installed that actually finds the NIC and installs drivers on its own so you can get connected during the install. Linux distros could do this 5+ years ago, it's astonishing that it took MS so long to catch up. Kudos nonetheless, it made the install and connection pretty painless.
It wasn't without hiccups though. For example, she had Office 2003 on a CD and I tried to install it but Win Explorer insisted that the disk was blank and what files did I want to write to it? Good luck with that, I thought, writing to a closed CD. Tried another CD, same result. Music CD, lalalalala more of the same. Checked drive properties but everything seemed OK, oh but I set the region (just because) and the problem was fixed. Seriously MS, if the region needs to be set, WHY DON'T YOU JUST F*&^ING SAY SO WHEN WE TRY TO READ THE DISK. (Yeah, a bit pissed off, wasted time and all that).

Next thing, email. Oh look!! W10 has a new email client, let's try that. Ahhhhhh.... what do you mean, you can't import previous email settings? You're kidding, right?
Nope. They're not kidding. Nor can W10 figure out from your email file types what the original email client might have been. Remembering that this was a crash, and the user is a user, not an MS engineer. So, no email exporting was done and W10 didn't have a clue. Trial and error and Google finally led us to the right email client (in this case, Windows Live Mail worked out) and we got it sorted from there. Importing the old emails and contacts was another lesson in frustration that I won't bore you with. Then there were the odd old program, they were working on Vista and an online search says they'll work with W10 but they don't.

I connected the old HDD to the new box and selected the entire HDD for copy to the new (and significantly larger) HDD. W10, why you so stupid? Why you need to copy the same files over and over again? Can't you just do what we asked? After several 'what so you want to do with these 10,000 files you already have in the chosen location' errors we finally got it all copied to the new HDD. Sort of a local backup of the old system, so to speak. I'd love to have selected just the files and folders we needed and not copied all the dross but I didn't have a spare week to sort and copy individual files and folders. Again, why can't we just exclude? Xtree FTW!

It shouldn't be so hard. It used to be easier, XP and earlier, or maybe we had to know more stuff so we worked it out? Maybe Xtree was always (significantly) better than Windows explorer variations?

MS, if you're going to dumb the user down (as you have been, slowly but surely since Windows 1), how about making the OS smarter to compensate? All this talk about how easy it is to use but you still have to just about be an MS certified software engineer to get everything working, especially on a rebuild.

Good and bad. Some things were really sorted, other things left me wide-eyed with astonishment at the stupid. Overall (apart from 'start menu' tiles) it's quick and clean once it's configured properly, and apart from the odd old program that's not working despite MS assurances, Ruthie is happy now. Although I suspect that's more to do with the significant speed improvement overall, rather that the OS, per se.

This is a feature not a bug.

I just had a cumulative update install itself.
Cool, what effect will that have I wondered?
Clicked on View update history.
Clicked on the Cumulative update.
Clicked on Support info.
Got an enormous long list of file names. How utterly helpful?
What's wrong with a normal changelog that tells you what problems were fixed and what features were added and removed.

Delete cookies?! Are you insane?!

Once the upgrade is done, and Disk Cleanup is ran, shouldn't the folder "$Windows.~WS" disappear? I still have it on my laptop, even though I installed Windows 10 from the USB tool.

$Windows.~BT and $Windows.~WS are temporary folders and can be safely deleted.

4-5 minute start up? that is not usual, you have something wrong. how many programs/Apps do you have opening at Start-up?

Its all to do with the drivers for the AMD 6600M and 6700M Series laptop drivers. You delete them and instant startup , trouble is windows auto downloads them again and then you are back at square one. Its mentioned on a few forums but there is no work around at present.
Its still a real pain in the arse as was fine on windows 8.1.

As a workaround, sleep it instead of shutting it down. Couldn't be tolerating 4-5 min startup!!
