If it's the persons main computer using insider builds is ill advised. They probably need to start with their latest legit OS and do the upgrade path, after that they can clean install if they have an activated install registered.

$200 for W10 home is a lot of money to some people, if they wanted a full version of W10. There's no upgrade path from XP as far as I know. So it's probably either ancient XP with security issues or W10 insider, which should be pretty reliable by now.

They may have to bite the bullet, there is few free rides except maybe Linux

Or Linux Mint. Its awesome. The only gotcha for the average user is duck duck go instead of google but that is easily changed. +install Chromium and show how to use 'windows update' and the software installer.

Yeah, Ubuntu or Linux Mint could be fine, but they have girls around 8 and 12 who use it for school and may find it confusing if they're not using MS Office. I'll try the insider thing first, after that I'll say buy it or use Mint.

For 200 maybe an s/h i3 or C2D with a free win 10 upgrade. But if the girls are using office online that should be ok with Mint & Chromium (edit: or Chrome). I'm guessing dont recall if I used it.

Yep. Then after use the reinstall wipe option to get a clean system.

yes you can be on the perpetual Windows Insider Preview program, but you won't get a free/activated version now like you could previously. You will need to stay on the program and update, else your copy of Windows will expire.

You can check the expiry date from WINVER

Interesting. Checked on my tablet. I installed the Preview during the beta, it was activated but WINVER says "Evaluation copy. Expires 16/07/2016'

I thought I had a good copy on this tablet...

My mum doesn't use her laptop much, but after installing Win10 last night on my laptop, I am wondering if its worth updating hers as well? The thing is, it's quite old and slow.

It is a Compaq Presario CQ57

Some specs..

Win 7 Home Premium
2GB Ram
64-Bit
500GB HD
Intel Celeron CPU B815 1.60GHz

Not sure what other specs are necessary?

Basically its old + slow. Is it worth the upgrade (Would Win10 Make it any faster?) or should she just buy a newer one?

Personally I would go for a clean reinstall of 7H in preference to 10 in that scenario.

@Finch -- my >10 year old Toshiba laptop (32 bit, small HDD, but actually 4 GB) became young and sprightly again updating from win 7 ultimate to Win 10 Pro. I'm glad I did it!

The b815 is sandy bridge should be ok but a fall back plan is wise in case of unanticipated driver issues etc.

Just going to go straight ahead and do it. She doesn't really use computers (or Smartphones) anyway, and doesn't have many files so not a big loss should anything happen.
