I just created a shortcut containing:

rasdial.exe "VPN Name"

This does the connecting. To disconnect:

rasdial.exe "VPN Name" /DISCONNECT

This works fine for my PPTP VPN with password pre-loaded.

Thanks, didn't work for me though, said invalid password. Using the GUI it worked fine, password saved. Not a big deal.

I enabled the Guest account, but every time I try to log in as Guest explorer.exe goes into a constant restart loop and the only way to stop it is to CTRL+ALT+DEL and log out again. Doesn't happen with main user account.

Run '/sfc scannow' in an elevated command prompt. Should fix the problem.

wow thanks. keep these things coming! 5 years ago when my life was without too many kids i could care about tweaking everything till it breaks and then restoring begrudgingly etc ... nowadays i use an iphone and don't touch my windows 8/10. so i wouldn't have found this out today.

and agree with mauricio ... WHY TWO SETTINGS INTERFACE!!! do we all have to have split personalities?

because this "feature" is not tweakable from the control panel!

These features and associated concerns (see also http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/jul/31/windows-10-microsoft-faces-criticism-over-privacy-default-settings and an excellent post on Reddit on how to disable data logging - https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3f38ed/guide_how_to_disable_data_logging_in_w10/) have tipped me over the edge and I have now turned off my Windows HTPC and will see how we go without it. I have over time moved most of the various media functions it "served" to my iMac and the only one I haven't yet moved is Kodi, but that has largely been replaced by iTunes/ATV combination.

I understand that nowadays it is all about the value-exchange and how much of your privacy you are willing to give up in order to get value in return. I am more than happy with that exchange in say Facebook, Twitter or Instagram but I do think Windows is offering less and less in return for a higher exchange of privacy. Some of the default privacy-related settings in Windows 10 are pretty aggressive in sending data to Microsoft. I imagine 80% of consumer users won't even know how to change these or even know about them.

Time to see if I can completely live without Windows!

The sfc stuff will work fine. The easiest way to get to the command prompt in W10 is to right-click on the Windows logo and select Command Prompt (Admin)

I was going to make a new thread entitled "Where Do You Go For Support?", but thought I should try in here first...

As many of you, I updated to Windows 10.. so far, it's ok aside from some driver issues..

I cannot adjust my screen brightness on my laptop anymore though.. I press the keys and the icon appears on the screen, but it neither goes up or goes down. I go directly into the display settings and it cannot be adjusted either. I used the AMD Auto Detect Driver software (it selected the correct card) and updated my driver to the windows 10 version, and once the laptop restarted, I was able to use the Brightness adjustment again.

I shut my computer down today though, and once again I cannot adjust it! Also, my touchpad settings do not save, I have to enable Scrolling every time.

Where would I go for support on these issues? HP, Microsoft, AMD or somewhere else?

You could go to the laptop vendors site and look for updated drivers, or place feedback as a problem in the Windows Feedback app in Windows 10. It's under W on the All Apps menu.
