Brumfondl:
ubernoob: I assume it will work in w10?  Still a noob

The sfc stuff will work fine. The easiest way to get to the command prompt in W10 is to right-click on the Windows logo and select Command Prompt (Admin)

Awesome. Thanks Brumfondl. It worked a treat. All systems go as they say if you're at the Auckland IRL 21 August I'll buy you a beer

I've partially solved the problem with the onscreen keyboard popping up. But now I can't login when in tablet mode without my type cover handy.

Having a try out of Cortana, with the region and language set to US,  but how do you get it to recognize Hey Cortana instead of clicking the mic icon all the time? There isn't a settings menu in the Cortana hamburger menu?

That one is pretty easy, but it affect other things as well.

Settings, System, Display and Change the size of text, apps and other items.

Can't find a way to just change the icon size though.

Apparently having classic shell installed confuses windows 10. Of course.

Customize the size of the icons in the task bar of Windows 8.1 and 10

Check that "Use small taskbar buttons" is NOT selected.

Tinshed:
These features and associated concerns (see also http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/jul/31/windows-10-microsoft-faces-criticism-over-privacy-default-settings and an excellent post on Reddit on how to disable data logging - https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3f38ed/guide_how_to_disable_data_logging_in_w10/) have tipped me over the edge and I have now turned off my Windows HTPC and will see how we go without it.  I have over time moved most of the various media functions it "served" to my iMac and the only one I haven't yet moved is Kodi, but that has largely been replaced by iTunes/ATV combination.

I understand that nowadays it is all about the value-exchange and how much of your privacy you are willing to give up in order to get value in return.  I am more than happy with that exchange in say Facebook, Twitter or Instagram but I do think Windows is offering less and less in return for a higher exchange of privacy.  Some of the default privacy-related settings in Windows 10 are pretty aggressive in sending data to Microsoft.  I imagine 80% of consumer users won't even know how to change these or even know about them.

Time to see if I can completely live without Windows!

Tinshed...or Tinfoil (as in HAT)??

Joking aside, it sounds like you're just looking for an excuse to ditch Windows, and these, often factually incorrect and almost always misleading, internet "reports" have given you that. These are default settings, wheich are just the latest iteration of long-standing equivalents from earlier versions of Windows, and only mirror what other companies and software do also. You talk about moving your HTPC to an iMac as though Apple are any better... seriously, they're all as bad as each other in this regard (and in fact Facebook, Twitter, etc are actually even WORSE than the likes of MS, Apple, Google yet you're happy to use them???)

Only the most naive user would set up ANY software these days without at least checking the privacy settings first, and those who actually truly care about privacy are not even going to argue that point.

So in summary - MS are no worse than anyone else in this respect, and better than many. Complete your move to Apple, by all means, but don't try to pretend that it's because you think they care more about your privacy than Microsoft do.

one tiny new issue I have just found is, I now have my rear and front audio ports joined so my 2.1 system and headphones both work together and plugging and unplugging doesn't override one from the other as before.

Any suggestions?

This [Unchecked] also has the advantage of showing more detail for the date/time display on the Notification bar.
