nathan: The WU setting that allows all users (ie standard users) to install updates from WU does not allow a standard user to install Windows 10

If you want to stop a local admin from installing Windows 10 thru WU set this key

Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

And then watch MS over write it .... See articles above.

But that's missing the point- MS SHOULDNT be doing this in the first place and forcing IT to play silly beggers trying to stop them is a waste of resource, time and money.

Whose Pc is it? theirs or ours? EXACTLY.

I have a related question. What happens if 'decline' is clicked on the first stage of w10 setup after the upgrade process has started?

That is, what technical stage is that and how seamless is the rollback likely to be?

in the Get Windows 10 app

"No thanks" was the 'X' button when you were given the options of "Upgrade Now", or "Download now, upgrade later".

Once you clicked one of those, the "No thanks" button became 'Click here to reschedule or cancel' and the 'X' became "Dismiss this window".

I wonder how many people wanted Windows 10 (or at least "to stay on the latest version"), but either didn't know how to upgrade to it or were afraid to schedule it themselves and are now glad that the free upgrade was scheduled and run the upgrade.

It will rollback at that point. Our data shows the rollback process is very reliable.

The OS respects that key, we don't overwrite it, it has worked since July 2015 and continues to work. If you're an administrator you have permissions to HKLM to modify that key.

so because it might have been ok for some people means it should be ok for everyone?

your posts make it seem like you have you have your head in the sand and dont give a hoot what customers think

That kind of talk is not going to change the situation. Allowing windows update to manage the machine always carried these risks. It is an unfortunate situation in many cases but at least there is a built in rollback in the 10 upgrade case.

Every single roll back we've seen all scheduled tasks are corrupt.

Seems to be a common issue. Someone is documenting the issue with manual steps and maintaining an open source fix:

Just noticed Steve Gibson released a configuration utility and documentation:

I may have to roll back or reinstall a 7 later this month. If so I will use it.

All this utility does it set the registry keys to disable the GWX App and remove the ability to install Win10 via Windows Update

It requires local admin rights just like it requires local admin rights to actually choose to install Windows 10

Same REG keys that are documented here since July last year
