When I click on the "Computer" icon from the Start Menu or Click or double-click "Computer" after starting Explorer.exe I get Computer (Not Responding) and do not see a list of any devices on my computer in the right pane - it stays completely blank.

Am using Windows 7 Professional 32 bit version. The computer has only recently started doing this and also does the same in Safe Mode. One has to kill off the hanging "Computer" Task which causes all the Desktop icons to redraw.

No other explorer.exe features have a problem. I can only see and access the C: Drive as displayed under the Computer icon. empty Devices like the A: floppy drive (though not used) and the D: CD/DVD drive are not displayed unless they have a disk in them and I type D: in the Run box which opens a new explorer window showing the device only in the left panel.

Have run avast anti-virus software across all files and run CCleaner to clean the registry then rebooted.

I have searched the Internet and not found a solution to this problem.

I have finally resolved this problem by using the ShellExView program given as the Answer on a Microsoft question and answer website. The answer has a link to the fileinspect website which suggests using ShellExView when Windows Explorer crashes.

It worked for me and I was able to narrow the problem down to an old version of WS_FTP Pro which caused the Not Responding crash. Disabling the old WS_FTP Pro extensions fixed the problem.

If others get this problem it may also be caused by an old version of recently installed software.
