My netbook is turning to a dog.

I was going to throw 8Gb of ram into it until I discovered that it won't help as Win7Starter only supports 2Gb.

So, I want to know if I can do an upgrade and if that will then let me add more ram or if everything will just come off the rails?

If you're going to do a straight upgrade from Windows 7 Starter then there is no point putting anything more than 4GB in as you will only be able to do a upgrade to a 32bit version of Win8 hence limiting you to just below 4GB of usable ram.

As for the upgrading side, I haven't read anything that states it won't work but at the same time 95% of the documentation i've looked at is based around Win 7 Professional and Enterprise.

No reason why you cant upgrade if you want to. Will be fine and might even seem a bit faster if everything is to be believed about windows 8, hopefully drivers will all work and if not, you should be able to use win 7 drivers if needed.

On the ram side though, you can only put 2gb in any atom netbook. It is a hardware limitation independent of OS.

Lots of people had had reasonable results with 2GB ram and a cheap ssd though.

I have exactly same model Netbook. I have upgraded from windows 7 Basic to Windows 8 Pro. However one big drawback is that Metro UI is unusable. Since the netbook's native resolution is 1064 * 600 and Metro UI requires 1064 * 764 minimum.

There are some registry hacks on the internet, I have already tried them I by changing the resolutiong to 1064 * 764 and metro doesnt work.

So I have installed app called start8, which enables start button. However I haven't found any useful information to completely disable the Metro UI.

Download and run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant to find out more.

I managed to install a 64 bit version on Windows 8 Pro. Problem I am facing is that the brightness of the screen is really bright.

Control from the windows charm or function key to reduce the brightness doesnt seem to work.

I am looking for a program that allows to control the brightness.
