Hi,
I have the opportunity to buy a surplus laptop at a good price from an employer.
It's currently running OpenSuse, but I'd like to make it dual-boot to Windows.
There is a License sticker for Windows 7 Home Premium OA on the bottom of it - obviously the original OS of the machine. Will it work to obtain install DVD for that Windows version and re-use that code? If so, where can I obtain the DVD?

Richard

Obtaining the DVD is the hard bit.

It used to be easy - Microsoft supplied ISOs for download for all versions, but now they don't.
You can try going through them, and entering the key to see if they will send you a DVD, or let you download it, but it did not work for me when I was hunting for an OEM DVD/Image for a Dell laptop with an OEM key sticker on it. They took my order, but cancelled it about a week later saying I had to go through Dell.

So, maybe try the manufacturer of the computer?

Edit: To answer the topic question, Yes, you can use the license.

you can contact the OEM that manufactured that machine and ask them how much their recovery media costs

or ask around for an OEM Windows 7 DVD as someone did recently.

To be clear - it MUST be OEM and it MUST be the same version (home/pro etc) as the sticker.

I didn't think it mattered if it was home or pro anymore, just needs to be an OEM disk. The licence key then picks the the relevant version to install, or you're asked which version to install if you don't enter a key. It has been a few years since I've tried this mind you.

Thanks,

I've talked to HP support and they can give me a link to an ISO when I'm ready.

Really? Wow, did you call them?

I got absolutely nowhere last time I tried this.

Hopefully it is not a link to the Digital River download. That has gone (it was where Microsoft Download pointed, and if you Google OEM ISO download, most results will point there, but you end up at Microsoft and have to provide your key, which being an OEM will not work).
