So I have managed to upgrade an oldish Dell laptop and my newish work/dev PC with no issues. But my ASUS laptop (X751L) is causing no end of headaches. I have tried doing it using Windows Update, tried using the media creation tool, tried deleting the $WINDOWS.~BT and SoftwareDistribution\Download folders etc, but each and every time it does all the pre-processing stuff, then reboots and I see a flash of a screen showing 'Update' with a round progress bar, then it reboots again and loads Windows 8.1, telling me the upgrade failed.

Anyone got any bright ideas about how to resolve this? I have done a LOAD of reading online and can't seem to find anything directly related.

Am I not providing enough detail or information? Has no one seen this before?

I am really at a loss as to how to proceed with this, there is nothing on any of the support forums that seem to help.

Maybe that is why there is radio-silence...

I would consider doing a fresh install of W10, but I don't think the licensing would work, since I haven't successfully *upgraded* by original OS install - is that correct?

Did you try the obvious? Googling the error message and doing what is recommended. ie unplug all but the primary drive, including optical drive.

Search link. Suggestion one, two, three. The next step is reinstall your current OS from the installation media you have and try fresh. Macrium Reflect Free, ideally using a boot disk, will let you save your current drive. To make the image smaller you can delete existing restore points before you start, and run the disk cleanup tool. Also move any data to another disk other than the OS disk.

Trust me, I have definitely googled the error message. And tried all suggestions, bar unplugging drives and/or reinstalling the current OS.

This was a brand new laptop I received about a week before attempting to do the upgrade, and it has no optical drive, just a SSD and a 1TB HDD. So I was (perhaps foolishly) thinking it would be a nice easy candidate for the upgrade ;).

I appreciate your response tho Timmay, will read up those links you sent and have a go with the Macrium tool. Although I might just start from scratch since there is next to nothing installed on this machine currently.

Was hoping for a magic bullet, but it is looking more and more like a half day spent rebuilding...

I must admit, I didn't notice the relevance to my setup with that first link you sent Timmay - i.e. SSD + HDD - my bad, should have picked up on that.

Will have a crack at disconnecting the HDD and try my luck again.

Appreciate you taking the time to nudge me in the right direction...

Unplug the HDD and try before you do an OS reinstall. Reinstall should only take an hour or so, but if that doesn't want to upgrade I think you call the manufacturer support.

UPDATE: resolved! Firstly thanks to Timmay for steering me in the right direction. I also contacted the supplier (JustLaptops) and they had had a customer with the same issue, who had resolved it by running *diskpart clear* on the secondary HDD (after backing up the contents!).

I did the same and all of a sudden the W10 flew thru with no issues.

Basically you can only have one EFI partition it seems (not that I had ever heard of this before!).
