Hi,

My girlfriend's woefully crappy Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 3 laptop is experiencing a number of issues that we cannot seem to find the root cause for.  They are:

  1. The laptop seemingly randomly reduces the volume to zero
  2. It goes into sleep mode randomly (sometimes when she has only left it idle for as little as 2 minutes
  3. While working on it parts of the on screen text just disappear until she scrolls the screen up or down

She is running Windows 10 on this machine.

I have done the usual things like ensuring the power settings never put it to sleep when plugged into a power source, making sure the volume settings are Do Nothing on the Communications tab of playback settings, and all drivers are up to date.

I am at a loss as to where to go from here.  Any suggestions or pointers would be welcome.

Thanks.

Still under warranty? Time for service.

If it was only volume I would suggest a keyboard/connector problem.

Parts of the screen could indicate a graphics problem.

Check for specific lenovo 10 drivers, and check for any bangs in device manager, but I think you are looking at service or replacement.

What do you mean by "bangs in device manager?"

If Lenovo were easy (or even slightly easy) to deal with then I'd talk to them.  But they sold us a laptop and compatible dock which don't work well together and although they have acknowledge the problem (as have other consumers around the globe), the refuse to do anything about it.  Wonderful business model if you want return custom...

Devices with [!] exclamations over them. In addition anything listed under 'unknown device'.

Re dock issues. If purchased in NZ then CGA may give you some options.

Lenovo are pretty good on their website.

How did you get the "latest drivers"? From lenovo.com/nz/en/ or somewhere else? By manually selecting your system or entering your serial number or using "Detect my product"? Did you install the Lenovo system management software?

Have you run the Lenovo hardware diagnostics to see if there is a hardware problem?

Thanks for the help guys.  I use the Lenovo drivers for everything possible, and installed a few more updates which seem to have fixed the random shutting down issue.  The graphics issue is still prevalent but we are now getting an error message that I will need to investigate further.  Finally, we plugged the speakers into my girlfriend's iPhone and they exhibited the same behaviour so have returned them for inspection.
