Check that you don't have a proxy configured on your browser. If you are using an anti-virus with "browser protection" make sure it's not blocking the traffic. Perhaps turn the feature off and see if the browser works.

Run an antispyware scan.

Don't wait for "when". Download and and run an antispyware scan now.

yea if something serious happens to your computer like programs crashing etc. and the problem goes away there's no guarantee it won't come back. better to find the source of the problem now.

I am going to ask one more time... Have you scanned it with an antispyware yet?

sorry for delay had to run tests, i ran the following

Adaware 2007 pro
Spybot
AVG
AVG anti rootkit

None found anything other than the usual tracking cookies

My msn and outlook remain working, but my browsers and browser based updates (spybot etc) stop after 5-10 mins

any ideas or further steps?

Sorry about the late reply, the above lines would suggest two things, one is that it is a back door, or two it is a stuffed host file. Search on Google on how to do so, and modify.

Firstly however, I would update all my antivirus etc, download the latest nod32 trial, and do the checking again, also try doing them in safe mode. Hope this helps keep us posted.
