My wife's machine failed twice to update the anniversary update. We turned off the ability to let it happen at it's discretion. I then went through with some trepidation, but apart from losing some privacy settings and the Win7 games, everything seems to be fine.
So this weekend we'll try again. Trouble is "if you always do what you've always done, you'll get the same results". We can't identify exactly what went wrong - two different results- but have at least learned to first save a checkpoint so we don't have to go back too far should we have to restore.
Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions to minimise our risk (and Linux isn't acceptable 😄.
Thanks

Pull all unneeded hardware for the upgrade and see if that helps.

Also remove all teh ghost devices before you do it, I had a couple of 1000 on one machine from all the USB devices that had been in and out of it on various ports and hubs etc, that sorted it. That was the motivation to try removing them on my other PC that was horribly slow and had 19000 ghost devices, and it took an eternity to do the anniversary upgrade when it did it.

I had a laptop that refused also to install the AU of Win 10 ... kept getting an "Install failed" message.

Went direct to download page and did it from there ... went through in about 15 minutes as I recall.

please share the "panther" log files from your c:\windows directory

or call 0800 800 004 for free support.  Windows Updates that won't install are considered a free support call.

thanks so much for this advice.

We will make sure extra hardware isn't connected (and will make sure it's plugged in via cbale as well - just in case). Will also investigate ghost devices - more likely to be an issue on her machine as it's a couple of years old.

I didn't realise there was an Aussie version. Maybe I'll get her to use the start procedure from the web site. I did and it was fine - hers were automatic attempts.

We didn't have error codes. The first failed obviously. The second seemed to work but the system was so unreliable after that we had to restore. I've leaned a lot this time, and your link will help (although I'm still hoping to fly through with no issues).

I knew nothing about the panther directory. One question - can we delete all contents before starting so only files there are created by the process? Amnd thanks for the info about the support line. Will keep that for next week IF needed. We should have a clean history to report if needed.

Thanks again

Hi Nathan

So tried a third time - and failed again. I figure I'll try the 0800 number next week. But you asked me to share the panther log files. This is a real newbie question, but I can't see how to upload files. Do I have to just copy and paste. setuperr.log is the one with errors in it - and is quite long.

Dropbox, OneDrive, pastebin etc. whichever sharing method is easiest for you.

0800 800 004 should be asking for those same logs too

Well, I've been using Dropbox for years to avoid clients having to FTP big files - I didn't realise I could share files with annyone. So I've tried with three files - and will be interested to see if it works. Of course i'll be even more interested if it results in us getting clues before we ring MS next week.

Thanks

A semi-final update. Two days (well 1 day over two calendar days) with MS support and we now know an answer. Our laptop isn't W10 compatible. We had not asked for the W10 upgrade - it did it itself. But it seemed to work well so we stayed with it - certainly better then W8. And it's worked well ever since - until the anniversary update.
Their advice is wait a month and try again when they'll have a "new" version of the anniverary update out. They really don't want us reverting to 8.
Interesting experience taking with MS support. The guy yesterday didn't have a sense of humour. When recovering from a heart bypass I discovered an Indian nurse there didn't have a sense of humour (not just had a differetn sense of humour), so I wasn't so shocked. At least the lady today did seem to respond normally. I found it interesting to note the great care taken with their scripts - always checking we were happy with what they were doing.
Anyway, we'll wait and see.
