I have had a message pop up on MS Edge saying they have found 148 instances where my Log in & Passwords have been leaked. I looked at what the report is telling me and some seem correct but there is a heap of user names and passwords that are 100% unfamiliar to me. I have never set up accounts with these websites. Is this legit?

It means you're using passwords that are known.

It doesn't mean your combination of email and password are known.

Check here: https://haveibeenpwned.com/  - Which recently teamed up with the FBI as well to ingest passwords they have identified!

Suggest you look at setting up a password safe...

I use Bitwarden and that appears on the list and my master password is there also. It’s a very long complex master password.
