Ive got the windows 7 msdn image running as my primary os on my laptop and recently it has been getting very hot and powering off after a couple of hours.
task manager shows low cpu usage but the fan is going insane. Is it do with my chipset drivers?

Its an  amd turion tl 60 btw
sb600/690 mobo

What brand of Laptop?
My HP Probook had it's fan going mental when I installed Windows7. I downloaded and installed the HP Recommended System Settings from their website, and it's all good now. (Found under Vista Drivers for my laptop)

Not sure, have you got aero turned on? i've noticed my 1005HA runs the fan a lot more using Aero on Win7 as opposed to never on my WinXP side.

Um, are you dual booting/ try XP for a bit, also in 7 try turning Aero mode off and see if it quietens down. I'd do what Trig says above and update your drivers :) sounds like the fan speed might not be turning itself down properly.

Ouch, powering off is a really bad sign though. Are you any good at opening laptops without voiding the warranty? I usually:
- undo the 8 or so screws at the back
- pop the panel off above the keyboard
- unscrew the 2-3 screws holding it in
- carefully remove the keyboard ribbon
Then look for the fan/CPU cooler, remove it from the numbers 4/3/2/1 these are the torque settings
IF you've had it around ayear or so, or even 6 months in a dusty environment you'll find a lot of dust clogging the fan. Remove it with a damn tissue with meths or blow through it with some compressed air.
Put the heatsink back on, tight 1/2/3/4 in that sequence, then put it back together.

If it's still under warranty though, take it back, overheating/turning off can also be caused by a faulty AC adapter surging the internal PSU and can risk a fire(my mums one burnt out that way, had to buy a replacement power board off Ebay)
