OK
Got a computer that is unpingable by name
Can ping via IP
Computer name does come up if doing command: ping -a xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
DNS Flush is done
The 'A' record is in the DNS
Have deleted and recreated the 'A' record
PC is named correctly under the system
Have made sure twice its same setup as the other PC's that are working via name
Uses static IP

Stuck on what else I can check

Not to sure if it will be the fire wall as we have about another 70 PC's with the exact same setup and they are not having any issues.
The PC names increment which is 3 Characters and 4 numbers
This one is in the middle somewhere of the 70 PC's

Have tried pinging the full DNS name and still no go

Rejoin it to the domain if you have one.

Has it ever worked properly ?

Has something changed ?

Is it a new machine taking place of a dead machine ?

Have you tried a different name for the PC, and able to ping it's new name ?

has you got a reverse lookup setup in DNS?

I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code

As quandum said.

The ping -a command uses a reverse lookup (rather than the normal forward lookup) to get your hostname.

So your ping -a resolves the hostname because you are requesting a hostname from an IP rather than a IP from hostname (forward lookup).

By the sound of it you have a reverse lookup entry (visable from ping -a or nslookup ) rather than a forward lookup entry, which is what you need.

What i would do:

1. See if your domain resolves anything via nslookup
2. If it does not resolve check your connectivity to the correct DNS server (via ipconfig and ping).
3. Check your forward lookup zone for the correct A entries.
