Hello forum,

I am not sure if this is the right place to post but since I did not see a big >>>post windows problems here<<< section i'll take my chances.

Here goes:

My sound disapeared suddenly and irremediably. I'm running vista SP2 family premium, I have a VGN-FZ21Z VAIO laptop (very good model until now).

Here is what happened: I was using revo unistaller to remove some VAIO crapware like the media center and such... at some point I went to get a drink and when i came back I tried to watch my fav show on the web and there was no more sound on the PC at all.

Here is what I tried in order:

1. restart
2. shut down and restart
3. reinstall the driver
4. system restore

At that stage, I found out that my VSS service was off all along and not only I can't restore but I can't seem to get VSS to work either...

At this stage I figured that Revo must have deleted something vital to windows so I tried to install SP2 again.

5. download and install standalone vista SP2

exept it won't install.... for some reason.

6. Download and install KB 948465 (the win update repair tool)

same, it won't install.

7. I ran a SFC/scannow in the cmd prompt ==> no issues found.

8. I came to you and typed this message
9. I bought a mac. (next week)

PLEASE HELP !!!!! I don't want to reinstall windows, I've got like 50 craked games on the harddrive.

Anyone know If i can run a diskcheck /r in vista like it was possible to do in XP ???

Forgot to mention something... Revo might not be responsible, I also let windows updates run some time before the problem occured. Might be windows updates... I don't know anymore.

Hi,
Just after a bit more info on your issue ..

- Is the sounds device in device manager listed as still being present ?

- Any chance you can show a list of your current running services ?

- Also have you tried headphones just incase its a localised speaker issue ?

- Does the sound work in safe mode ?

Also chkdsk / r in vista i think (could be mistaken not near Windows pc at the mo)

Yes it isnt localised

No worries, i use to fix laptops so have seen many causes for the "no sound issue"

Have you installed the original drivers package from here http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/preinstalled/index.aspx?l=en_GB&m=VGN-FZ21Z ?

Here I finaly got around to taking these damn screen shoots (the perfect weather we got this week end in Switzerland didn't speed things up I'll tell you).

Hey, few more things to try,

- Are there any issues in dxdiag.exe under audio (can be typed into the “search programs and files”)

- When you reinstalled the driver, did you also try removing from device manager and check the tick box “delete the driver software for this device” is ticked. Restart then reload the driver.

- Do you have wireless on the laptop? If so turn it off and see if sound comes back (its true have seen this a few times!!)

- Can you check to make sure the driver update actually worked?

Open Device Manager > expand "Sound, video and game controllers" > double-click "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC" > click Driver tab.
2. Driver Date is: 13/09/2007.?
3. Driver Version is: 6.10.5614.0.?

Have you checked under the volume control (right click volume control, click playback devices make sure sigmatel is the default device ~ could try the configure button and test the device there as well.

Also often manufactures will have their own control panel for their devices, in this case audio, so i would check if sigmatel has its own program, if so make sure nothing is on mute or not configured correctly ~ try setting to default.

Does your laptop have soft buttons or FN controls? if so you may have an option on the keyboard that will disable/enable the sound by pressing the FN button + another key (often with a speaker symbol)

You could try installing a codec pack just incase the cleanup screwed anything up in that department, try http://www.cccp-project.net/download.php?type=cccp

To rule out a hardware issue, you could either grab a spare laptop hdd and install a fresh copy of windows or you could try downloading the live cd version of say Ubuntu or any other of the variants floating around which, if you haven’t used it before, basically allows you to run a operating system off a cd (live) rather than having to install over your hdd, really handy for sorting out issues like this.

Let me know how you go.

Thank you for sticking with me on this, I apreciate it very much. I haven't checked dx diag i'll do that as soon as I get home.

Yes I did follow that exact procedure when disinstalling the driver. I do have wireless and I admit i'm a little exited to go home and turn the switch ;) altough i'm not getting my hopes up.

I don't believe in a hardware issue as BIOS sounds still work but i'll try, i've got ibuntu on a stick, very cool way to boot IMO.

I'll also check the versions and the codec pack, thanks for the adress btw.
