Yay! I've finally plunged and went down the WHS path. Scored a mint HP MediaSmart EX490 from Christchurch Harvey Norman Moorhouse for NZ$699 (RRP at $1149 or there-about). Norman Ross still priced theirs at $1099, and even went over to Global PC next door to price a custom built which is at $1099.)

Anyhow, this EX490 has Celeron 2.2GHz and capable of 64-bit, so hope when WHSv2 Vail is out, it is upgradable, otherwise I am just as happy with a WHS. :-D.

So what's recommended for essential WHS add-in?

Also I'm of the opinion that the home server should be really vanilla - any web sites/programs processing etc I do in a Vmware Server vm...

Do you install VM inside the WHS?

I had to restore Tardis; at one stage with configuration, I decided to enable automatic update and what-not, and I think that may have "ruin" the setup process. What a mission to try to restore as the HP's eBook manual wasn't written for Windows 7 client. Anyhow, found few helps online and eventually set static IP address in 169.37.37.42, with firewall and antivirus deactivated, while connected directly between a client PC and the WHS. Then that worked.

This time round, I opted for custom configuration for update, and it got to the end of joining the WHS (from client PC).

Doing update at the moment, though seems to take a long while!!!!

What do you have in your VM? I got iTunes on Tardis eventhough it has Twonkyserver and Firefly came built-in. However I prefer iTunes Home Sharing. Just not sure how it mingle with other DLNA/Media Streaming apps.

I have a linux server Vm, a Windows 7 Desktop (I have no other machine) and a w2k3 server....they run all the time.

But running if needed are a Linux desktop (for Video processing), W7 Desktop also for video processing, a WHS testing machine, a vail testing machine, another Linux server, a w2k8 server.

How'd you score the EX490 at that price?

It was the last floor model at Harvey Norman Moorhouse (Christchurch). They have LX197 for $599 but that only have Atom 330 and among other "limited"-ness.

Otherwise elsewhere you'll pay up to $1199 for EX490. I'm liking ours :-) and such a bargain-lucky.

only 5400 RPM - but it's a storage drive.

Oooh.. more drive!!! I got 2 other 500GB external USB drives, the content are to move over still.

Do you reckon I can plug them in on WHS and copy/move them over to shared folders? Or I best copy over the network to shared folder?

Eventually, they'll be added into WHS as part of the DE storage pool.

Keep them external until you have copied the data over. Then once you have emptied one or both put them in to the HS and add them via the management console.

It's a blackbox external hard drive (Seagate) - anyhow, I was thinking more along the line of connecting it to WHS as independent storage, then copy its content over to WHS at \\server\share\, once completed, then I format/add it to the DE pool, would that work better/faster than copying content over network from the current PC the hard drive is connected to?
