Ok, so I have decided to give Linux a trial and install Ubuntu 7.10 on my laptop (dual booting with XP till I'm happy with things) It's great, soooo much faster than XP! (takes less than 1 minute to start computer, XP takes 4.5mins till useable!)
Seem to have most things working, haven't quite got the hang of using Terminal for installing things like Flash player etc, but i'll get there (never used command line stuff before)
However, I'm having issues getting Evolution to send my emails.(on xtra) I copied all my settings from my windows/outlook profile, and it receives fine. But when I try to send, it asks me for my smtp password, which I enter. But after 5 secs of thinking it tells me that it cannot authenticate with the smtp server, and to retry my password. So I rang Telecom and checked my password and account settings. They were correct. The person on the end of the phone then said
"Can you go into your email settings and tell me what you've got in certain boxes".
"ok"
"Which version of windows are you using?"
"I'm not using windows"
"Oh, a Mac User, well then just..."
"I'm not on a Mac, I'm running Linux, Ubuntu to be precise"
"What? Linux? Ahh, let me talk to my supervisor"
(on hold for about 10secs)
"We don't support any form of Linux, so you'll have to ring the Linux helpdesk and get them to talk you through it. Have a nice night"

So here I am, "ringing" the "Linux helpdesk"! ROFLLaughing
I have looked on a few forums etc, but all the probs seem to be with receiving and sending ok, mines the other way round. Any suggestions?? Remember, I'm new to Linux, so go easy...

Try the settings listed at nzconnections: http://www.nzconnection.net/Xtra_Email_%28%40xtra%29_settings

You may want the non-SSL if the normal settings really don't seem to like your new Linux install Laughing

Congrats on trying Linux, I am sure you will enjoy it - I do.

If you have a PC that can start Ubuntu in 1 minute, then I am positive that a clean install of XP will load just as fast.

I also run Evolution on Ubuntu 7.10, but I'm not with Xtra anymore,
so I cannot check on my setup for it.

Would it be possible to take a screenshot of the 'Sending Email' tab
in your Account Editor window? That way, we could see the settings
that you have and maybe suggest a few alternatives to try?

I have had several clean installs for various reasons on this laptop, and I always trim off unnecessary services to speed things up, but it's never taken less than 2 minutes. But by the time you add an antivirus software, wireless card and a few other bits and bobs it starts to put the hurt on. But I'm liking Linux so far, and so is my wife (she loves the new games!)

Anyway, here is my screenshot

I have just updated the settings as per the email I got from Xtra

Dan

Drop the @xtra.co.nz from the username... make sure the client is connecting to send.xtra.co.nz on port 465 with SSL.

You can set the port right after the hostname.

So:

    hostanme:port

However, if you select SSL, it might choose that port automatically for you.

From memory you have to specify the port as you suggest. Took me forever to figure that one out.

Evolution and Yahoo!Xtra Mail how-to:

Replace turdburglar with your username. For example if your primary email address was weblordpepe@xtra.co.nz, then your username would be weblordpepe:

  • Basically, open Evolution and go to Edit, Preferences, and find your Xtra account from the 'Mail Accounts' tab.
  • Click Edit.
  • The 'identify' tab is basically all clean sailing.
  • On the receiving tab, change the following:
    Server Type: POP
    Server: pop3.xtra.co.nz
    Username: turdburglar
    Use Secure Connection: SSL Encryption
Under Authentication Type select Password and tick 'Remember Password'.
  • On the Receiving Options tab, nothing changes
  • On The Sending Email tab change the following:
    Server Type: SMTP
    Server: send.xtra.co.nz:465
    Tick 'Server requires authentication'
    Use Secure Connection: SSL encryption
    Authentication type: PLAIN
    Username: turdburgler
    And tick 'Remember password'.
  • Click OK, and thats it. You'll be prompted for your password when it first sends and receives email. Other than that you are all good to go.

Its also recommended to use SSL for POP3 as well, using port 995

or port 587? (Also SMTP/w SSL submission)

Ok, so I installed Thunderbird, and all is well. I had to turn SSL off for receiving, but other than that it all works. So I'll ditch Evolution and just use Thunderbird.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions. No doubt I'll be back sometime
