I'm thinking of using an old pentium 4 1.8 GHz , 768MB RAM, GF6600 running XP SR2 for linux (ubantu 9.10) as a mythTV system -

I know absolutely nothing about Linux except it evolved from Unix which I knew existed in a mainframe at tech when I was younger.

I would like to install ubantu 9.10 (dual boot), run MythTV which I've read about is quite customizable, with an oldish Hauppauge WinTV RVR-500MCE to record analog TV

1. Is this do-able? Has anyone done this.
2. What format would MythTV save the TV as? Currently my XP-MCE records as *.dvr-ms which only works with windows media player,  Air video Server (iphone app) and PQ DVD-iPhone video converter.

Yes this should work fine. MythTV will produce .mpg files as this card has hardware MPEG2 capture support for turning analogue streams into files with no CPU overhead.

I've been using these cards in myPVR which is MythTV based for a number of years.
