just more info.. i am the admin on the system.. my pw works for sudo commands..i have configured things in the network applets.. but some how the connection does not happen.. blue lights on the modem..

I have got it to work using mandriva and wvdial

rather impressed how quickly it connects and the speed of firefox loading etc
