Hi,

Have built a new Pc and did not want to spend on a new operating system, and the vista32bit i was running on the old pc, just was to much work to get stable.  I have installed the latest Ubuntu and although a little strange to start with, after a couple of days i am  enjoying it.

Questions ;,My wife is studying so needs a windows readable format, `wordesque` to type up assingments etc and email to a  windows system , can open office be easily read by windows os or is there a better way/software to use e.g sending as pdf.

I can only get certain software to recognise my creative webcam instant, vf0040. Need to get it to work on skype. Pc does not list it as hardware or periphals etc, cant find it anywhere. Only worked with cheese web cam booth.

The Monitor works fine but says it is not recognised (does this matter), hp vs17e, ive found a download, but think i have to possibly do code, which i have no experience with whatso ever, but would be happy to try, with some advice.

On another note off topic , on boot, a message flashes that it cant find hard disk, but hard disk is fine on all the checks and recognised, (this started occuring after i tried to check to see if two old graphics cards where working and also compatible (should have checked first as neither are).

M4A785td-v EVO/U3s6 /Phenom 2 Black edition 4core 955 3.2ghz/ 4gb (value for now)/ Samsung (Sata) Harddrive 1TB

Cheers for any help that can point me in the right direction

OpenOffice.org can save as *.doc but exporting as *.pdf is better for sharing any final documents.

Maybe have a look here to see if there's some info relevant to your webcam.

If the monitor's at the resolution you expect then I wouldn't worry.

Are your SATA ports set to AHCI or legacy IDE? Does the message flash after Ubuntu starts to load, or after POST? Do you have a secondary SATA controller with nothing plugged into it?

HI,

Thanks for the info on doc, and i will have to check out webcam link.

MB has Raid capability, so using one of the SATA ports, MB set up on all defaults so assume it would be AHCI but i better check, it also has an empty IDE slot.

It Is the first thing that flashes on screen when i turn on, so at post i assume.

Will have a check tonight and get back, ta for the help

I will compartmentalize my reply for your convenience

*** Microsoft Office - Installing On Ubuntu ***

On Ubuntu press the applications menu and select Ubuntu Package/Software Manager

In the search box type "Wine" without quotation marks, and install the non-beta one (read names, the beta will install side by side).

Insert MSOffice 2003 (or 2007) Disk into the tray and let it load.

Open Terminal (Accessories in the programs menu)

type " cd /media/OFFICE11/" and hit enter - Note that OFFICE11 is the folder name for the 2003 disk, simply use file browser and confirm your disks name.

type "wine setup.exe"

Install it as you would on a windows machine, note that it will install everything default regardless of what tickboxes you select, so just take the default options.

Once installed type "winecfg"

Go to the Libraries tab.

In the Libraries tab in the area labeled "New override for library" type in riched20.dll and click on Add.

You will see it appear in the list below. Now select the riched20 in the list that we just added and click on the Edit button.

Set it to Native (Windows) and click OK.

This will allow Powerpoint and the other applications to run correctly.

Done!

To install service packs and compatibility packs simply download them somewhere you can cd to in terminal, putting them in your home folder is "cd //" then type "wine ".

*** Open Office ***

If you use this beware the saving format, it uses its own format when you really want .doc. Also beware the spell checker, it is not as reliable as Office.

I too am extremely new to Ubuntu 10.10, I've got a Windows 7 machine setup as a home network and I'm sharing files to my PS3 and TV (DLNA).

How do I add this network to my new ubuntu desktop? I'd like to access these media files. Could someone point me in the right direction.

Assuming you are using Gnome, this means you have an applications and system menu. The system menu has preferences and system. Under system find "synaptic package manager" and run it.

In the search box type "Samba" right click on the samba client and select "Mark for Complete Installation".

On the windows machine check your MSN, start -> control panel -> add/remove programs

Find "Windows Live Essentials 2011" or "Windows Live Sign-In Assistant" and remove them.

If you had 2011 you will need to reinstall windows live messenger 2009, then uninstall sign in assistant, just google it.

The reason you do this is that the sign in assistant (which is embedded inside msn 2011 edition) blocks samba from connecting to windows PC's.

On the Ubuntu machine right click on the folders you want to share and share with guest privileges. If you want to password it i can teach you, but its a lot harder, if your network is private then you should be fine.

On Ubuntu open Folder, then select network, windows network, workgroup THEN your PC, not before (it will appear outside the windows network folder too but this will not work). On Windows the Ubuntu will appear under "Network" (start menu or LHS of your folder windows.

ok, thanks for that.

I now can see the windows 7 PC, but it now asks me for a username, domain and password. I'm not sure where to go from here, the usernames and passwords I've used don't work but I don;t think I've setup windows PC properly. Can you point me in the right direction.

Unbuntu can see my Windows 7 computer name and workgroup, but I get stuck from this point.

help appreciated.

I would stay clear of Wine for stability issues and such. You'll find it may be sluggish and doesn't feel right. OpenOffice is great, I'd stick with it.

Wine works fine on certain programs, the app-db is a good guide as to individual program stability. Programs do lag a little more than native windows though.

If Ubuntu asks you for a username, domain and password when connecting TO a windows PC you have the sign-in assistant installed. Uninstall Windows Live Essentials, MSN, Sign-In Assistant and try again.
