I do a lot of family IT for macOS in Tauranga and over to Cambridge, which I not mind travelling to, for elderly relatives. But I have a 74yr friend on the Nth Shore who rings me every so often for some help. Trying to rectify things over the phone is becoming a bit of a hassle as he tends to forget terms like; Dock, Menu bar & Tab bar etc, return key or left click on OK etc, which is all a bit tiresome 😞.

Now I know that macOS Messages has 'Ask to Share Screen' and there is also an inbuilt 'Screen Sharing.app', I have never used these macOS services but I believe using them would lower my stress levels during these help sessions. 😀

I obviously do not want to pay money for this ability. So has anyone had experience screen sharing on macOS and is it easy to take control of the other persons machine to rectify any issues and to educate.

Thanks

Check out the free Connectwise Control option, works great with MacOS and you can control a Mac from any other device, Mac, Windows, Linux or smartphone/tablet.

It can be a bit tricky to get it working fully on the latest MacOS due to the new security features in there but they have all the instructions on how to do it.

You can leave it installed so you can remotely connect in without them having to do anything first.

Hi~

I (in AKL) have used this function before to help my dad (in China mainland) adjust some settings. Open spotlight search and type screen sharing to open, then put Apple ID of the remote Mac. Once the remote one agreed to be controlled, you can control the screen of the remote one and talk to each other.

No need to install software, quality is acceptable, together with clipboard sharing. For me, this function is enough.

The official guide of this function:

Feel free to ask me anything about this.😁

Jiriteach: TeamViewer

AnyDesk is another alternative.

Admittedly, both of these answers do not answer the OP's question.

@Albatron

Thank you.

Does the Messages app > Buddies > Share Screen use the screen sharing app or is it separate from the Screen sharing. If separate what is the better tool/service; Messages or the Screen Sharing app ?

Sorry for the late reply.

Never used in Message.app before, but I have just tested for you.

They are the same, both methods guide you to the same "Screen Sharing.app".😄

I moved away from TeamViewer after the breach a few years back. If you're looking for a macOS version agnostic solution that can traverse weird network issues (like, if Bonjour has been blocked), a good one that I use a lot is JumpDesktop

I've tried lots of apps over the years but the simplest solution for dad has been TeamViewer. I use it regularly to help sort out his Windows PC and connect from my Mac.
