I found a refurbished Macbook Air A1370 11.6" selling for $849 including Apple care protection plan. I think it said that the Apple care is valid until the end of 2014. I've been researching for a while and this is a pretty good deal. What do you all think?

Need the both the Axxx number and the EMC number to identify the model, or you could just post the specs.

Good deal? Depends which it is and what you intend to use it for.

I'm not sure what an EMC number is... but the laptop will be used for general purposes (word processing, watching movies, etc). Do you know where to find EMC number?

The vendor should be able to tell you. Failing that, find out the processor and speed and installed memory and ssd size.

Or maybe post or pm a link if there are specs given.

If that's for real it's good imho. Just remember to pay with a credit card so you can reverse if there are any issues with the deal.

I'm a bit suspicious of the Apple Care warranty on this. It's a 2011 Macbook Air that was discontinued June 2012. Apple Care is for 3 years from the date of purchase. However, it could be perfectly fine.

It might pay to ask if anyone here has had dealings with NZ Computer Sales Ltd of Ellerslie.

^To clarify - AppleCare is for 1 year from the date of purchase - that comes as standard. If you purchase an additional AppleCare Protection Plan you can extend that for another 2 years from the expiration date of the 1st year's AppleCare.

There's lots of AppleCare codes available on eBay and so on, but you hear a lot of stories about people buying them and when it comes time to claim something they get turned away because of an invalid number.

All refurb Mac's come with a standard 1 year AppleCare warranty, so I think that's what they're trying to say comes with the MacBook Air in this case, as they've stipulated the extended AppleCare costs $349. If it were included in the price that means the MBA would be $500 which is highly unlikely.

If I were you I'd be looking at the Apple Online Store in the Refurbished section and buying from there, at least then you know you have recourse should anything go wrong.

If its the NZCS I think it is, they are fine - In the past I have purchased a lot of ex-lease desktops from them - service is good and the computers were fine.

The ad is sent from yesshop though. I think they might be partners or something because they always have these deals on computers. Maybe NZCS supplies the computers for them.

It seems like these are most likely ex-lease macbook airs and not what Apple calls refurbished products. This means they have NOT been refurbished by Apple, so the AppleCare is treated like a second hand macbook air. You apparently still have some remaining coverage but it cannot be extended (as it already has been).

I would be a little wary of buying one, as you don't know exactly how it's been refurbished. For example, it could still have a battery that's near the end of its life or the SSD could be almost at it's maximum writes.
