My eldest is nearly 6 (going on 16) and loves playing around with my computer. Typing seems to be a novelty compared to touch screen tablets. Her school seems to use Macs, and I've got an old Macbook (circa 2007) that still works well enough other than a poked battery. I thought I would repurpose this as "her" computer. I'm looking for recommendations for educational / edutainment software suitable for a 6 year old. Something to encourage familiarly with the keyboard would be ideal. Any kind of introduction to programming would also be good - I have very fond memories of hypercard from my days at school, although that would have been more 8/9/10.

She's still a bit young for the internet, so I'll probably just disable internet access. So I don't (yet) need any kind of nanny software.

Tux4Kids: http://tux4kids.alioth.debian.org/. TuxMath, TuxTyping, etc.

The prebuilt OSX dmg have not been updated for some time. There may be later builds available from an OSX package manager, but dmg is very convenient.

Scratch is an awesome way to get into programming.  I used to be really into this when I was 8-10.
