The password (whatever it is - I have forgotten it) has not changed at all - and yet all of a sudden Mail is demanding it be entered.

Why?

You don't two factor authentication enabled on that Gmail account by any chance do you?

You don't use a VPN or DNS service (think Global Mode) do you?
Google might be thinking you're overseas and blocking access?

I have read somewhere that they are forcing encrypted passwords to be sent, this might be the issue? (uncheck "allow insecure authentication")

You need an app specific password by the sounds of it. See screenshot below.

No, I don't think so.

It seems to be a periodic thing. Perhaps every 'X' weeks it is forced to ask?

Just make sure you record your app passwords somewhere as I have not found a way to get google to redisplay them if you need to reenter them.

No, because they are recorded anyway by whatever software you put them into. The problem comes when google does its hissyfit because you are coming in from another IP and the braindead app deletes the saved password when it reprompts.
