My iCal calendar is obviously set to NZ time.

I am heading to the US in a few weeks and have a number of appointments there. They have been entered into iCal with their correct time zone set.

However, iCal annoyingly displays the meeting times as NZT rather than local time. For example, I have a drinks reception to attend at the Empire State in NYC at 630pm. iCal shows it as starting at 1030am.

This obviously would (I assume) change if the time zone for the computer I am viewing on changes. Time Zone Support is turned on.

What I want iCal to do is display the example above as beginning at 630pm when I look at it now because it confuses me to see it translated to NZT which is not relevant as the event is not in NZ. Can I make it do that and if so, how?

A quick google seems to point to this being a "feature" of ical,

Eventually I found a way...

If you enter the appointment and then set the time zone as "floating" in the drop down, the appointment time will never move with the time zone. So, if you set it for 6.30 it will remain at 6.30 in Auckland and still at 6.30 when you arrive in NYC.

Not a behaviour I would associate with the word 'floating' really but there we are!

What about the use case where you have an appointment for a conference call at 6:30pm in New York, but are calling in from a different timezone?

I think iCal is behaving correctly, by default, and provides a feature for planning as well.

I think iCal is behaving correctly, by default, and provides a feature for planning as well.

Or travelling to a meeting in a different timezone. In some parts of the world that might be a one hour drive or train journey across a state border.

The iCal default behaviour would give an accurate impression about the time needed to reach your destination.
