I just bought a late 2011 Mac(for $5) which was running El Capitan, but is now running High Sierra, anyway, being new to Mac OS, I am a bit stumped on how to get the dock unlocked, as when I got the Mac it wasn't even cleared of the past user and even though I found a command to get the Mac to create a new user from entering commands in Terminal some of the last users software is still present and still on the dock, which I would like to remove and customise it to the way I want it. I have tried Onyx and Terminal commands found online, but they haven't worked. Help!

You should just be able to drag stuff out of the dock that you don't want using the mouse.

You may have to drag it a little further away from the dock than you may think and pause for a second until the icon changes to indicate it will be removed...

Do you have admin access, or is it in Single user mode?

If you are new to MacOS the first thing you should do is create yourself a new "normal" user account to use,

Don't use an admin account for day to day use....

That doesn't work, neither does dragging applications to the dock, and there's no options under options when right clicking an application on the dock, such as keep in dock or remove from dock.

Admin access at the moment, I'll add a "normal" user account soon.

If it were me and I was unsure as the provenance and history of it, I would just wipe it and rebuild with High Sierra from scratch!

Command + R on boot to get into recovery mode

Disk Manager to wipe and create new partition

Connect WiFi from the wireless icon as needed to download the High Sierra package

Rebuild and set up clean and fresh as you like!

Did that, all working fine now. Thanks.
