I mentioned a while ago in another thread that my MacBook pro froze on one occasion and it wouldn't turn off / shut down, but that came right some how

It is also very slow at times (see my other thread), so decided I should back up the data 'just in case' the worst happens

I have a 1T drive I bought about 10 yrs ago and my brother in-law put stacks of music / movies on it and I used it to back up my old windows computer

Anyway last night I managed to wipe the drive (as it wouldn't work with my MacBook) but now my MacBook can't find it - I've plugged it in and everything but the led light on the 1T drive just flashes - any ideas what I can do to make the MacBook 'find' it again.... or should I just buy a new one?

any advice would be appreciated

Does disk utility in Mac OS see it?

If so, is it the right format? Can you run "First Aid" on it?

thanks for the advice

I did run first aid on it and got the following error message

"First Aid Process has failed - if possible back up the data on this volume. Click done to continue"

the drive is empty because it is showing 999.16GB, but I'm not sure what else I can do or try

If disk utility can see it you should be able to erase and reformat at the same time.

Portable hard drives are cheap these days. If it’s ten years old then you might as well just replace it.

ok so at the moment I've connected the drive up and runnning disk utility.

I clicked on 'restore' and it started the process (renamed the drive) but after about 15 minutes just came up with red / white exclamation mark and 'restore failed.......' message

looks like I'll have to buy a new external drive 😨
