Got a wee issue with photos on my new MBA M1, hopefully someone can shed some light.

My old MacBook is a 2011 Pro. When i take a photo on my iPhone or iPad, the original image is automatically uploaded to my photo library on my Mac and stored locally. Note this is not iCloud photos. It also meant that when I deleted the photo off my iOS device, the photo remains stored on my MacBook photo library. This was handy for me as it meant i could keep my phone clutter free of photos. It did meant that i had to periodically go into my photos app on my Mac and delete the stuff i really didn't want but it was worth it to keep my iphone photos clutter free.

I have just bought a M1 Air and it seems the only option is iCloud photos which also means that when i delete a photo off my iPad or iPhone, it also disappears off my Air. This is not what i want.

I really dont want to use iCloud photos on my mac as i have thousands of photos on there that i dont want showing up on my iPhone or iPad as its clutter to me.

Does anyone understand what I'm trying to explain?

Hope it makes sense...

Thanks

How did the photos get pushed from iPhone to Mac before? Presumably also done by iCloud, but not iCloud photos?

Presumably you "just" set it up the same. I have to confess all mine sync across all devices, which is fine for me, but not what you are after.

As far as I know, the only way the photos could end up on the mac without using iCloud Photos was if you used to connect the phone to the old mac and had the photos set to automatically import. This should still be doable on the new MBA. This can be done wirelessly. See the following article:

Yep agree, that sounds like wifi sync. Depending on the version of MacOS you were were running you might have problems getting it working. The sync changed from iTunes to Finder in Catalina and it is pretty broken still in Catalina. Not sure if it is better in the current version - most I know people just use iCloud photos or google photos.
