Hey everyone,
I need a little help setting up a wireless network. I have a Ibook G3 and want to network so I can connect to xtra wireless from the home computer which is running XP. so I brought a D-Link DI-524 Router and a D-Link DWL-G122 Wireless USB adapter because that was the only Wireless USB adapter that worked with Ibook because I don't have an airport card. So I connected the router to the Xtra wireless box then plugged it into the computer and installed it. Then i installed the Wireless adapter on the ibook and it picked up the Network. But neither the computer or the laptop will connect to the internet. So I unplugged the router and plugged the ethernet cable back into the computer and to the wireless box and it worked fine it just don't seem to want to run through the router. So I have no idea what I'm doing wrong I just followed the instructions. Does anyone have any idea or know how to setup a wireless network so I can have the net on the laptop?

how do you connect to Xtra's ADSL? is it Xtra's wireless ADSL-Router? if so, then you should just need the USB Wlan on your notebook.

There should be an instruction in the package on telling how to configure the Xtra's Wireless ADSL-router to set up for internet sharing through wireless-wired.

You shouldn't need DI-524. (that's the same model i use with my TCL Cable connection).

No like there's a box next to the computer that's connected to the satallite on the roof and a ethernet cable that usually is connect straight from the box to the computer. So that's why I brought the router but when you connect the router to this box it don't let you connect to the computer or the laptop.

Ah i see...

well you need to get few information ready...

First off, I need to say, i don't know how the Xtra's Wireless broadband (via satelite) works. So can only give a general hunch of what usually one can/should do to get the router working.

You will need to find out whether your connection is a static IP based or any other special protocol/connection, like with ADSL, it is set to do PPPoA. I presume with your connection it will be very similar to TCL's cable internet setup.

Get the IP address, Gateway address and DNS addresses if available:
* Go to Network Connections and right-click on your ethernet connection, and view its properties. From there, look inside the TCP/IP properties. Jot down the IP address/Gateway/Subnet/DNS that has been assigned. Keep this safe as this is virtually your address on the internet.

Set up DI-524:
* With DI 524, follow the wizard to go through the configuration. I recommend use a ethernet cable and use your notebook to access it. By default it will assign an IP address to your computer, otherwise make sure you are in the same ip range as the router. Refer to the DI 524's manual on how to get to its webserver configuration page. (again, read the manual as there are gems in them).

If you have followed through the wizard on the router, and i would guess to pick the "static" connection, put in the IP address and gateway information which you recorded on to its WAN configuration. Then check out the LAN configuration and DHCP. you shouldn't need to configure too much more. if any query, check the manual as it should be pretty descriptive.

Next, unplug your ethernet cable and try establish connection using WIFI from you notebook to router, and try get to the configuration screen with WIFI connection. if you can see the configuration webpage, then it means you can get to the router.

NEXT... is to connect your satelite box to the router. so unplug the cable from the pc to the router "WAN" port. and it should try establish connection. then try access the internet from your laptop, which has already establish connection to the router (from earlier). If you can get to the internet, then you are there (almost).

Last bit is to set your XP's lan IP to receive DHCP rather than having static IP. and plug the available ethernet cable from the pc to the router (Lan 1-4, any).

And try access internet from XP, and it should be fine.

Give or take a minute for both XP and notebook to get an IP address each time it boot up.

If you don't need DHCP, then you can disable it in router, and physically put static ip addresses on both XP and notebook, which is in the range as the router lan so they can get to the router.

Thanks for the help.. I've got the computer up and running through the router and I plugged in the laptop to the router to and that works. But I still got one problem I can't connect to the internet on the Ibook using the Wireless USB Dongle.. I've installed it and it picks up the router but it won't go on the net.. Do you know how to set that up?
