So for dinner last night we ordered a few pizzas from Dominos using their online ordering site. We ticked the "Send me email" box because we don't mind getting their bargains emailed to us :) Being web developers, we have a domain set up with a catch-all address, so we make up an email address for each business we ever give it to eg dominos@example.com

Anyway, this morning we received an email from "Mary" (email address rvkzr1pbp@gmx.com) directly to the address we used on the Dominos site last night. The email from Mary also addressed me by my real name, which we also put into the Dominos site last night.

The email was just this (completely un-styled ie plain-text email):

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, Jeff!

around Dunedinnorth?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

We did live in Dunedin North but that was a few years ago now.

So... very interested in people's thoughts on what's gone down here. And whether I should feel concerned about the fact I also entered our credit card details into their site in the same transaction... :o

I have been getting the same emails into my Spam box for the past few months, I was wondering where they had come from, the way some of them are written is quite creepy. Pleased to find out where it came from, also never ordering from Domino's online again!

So a month later there's still a breach? Yikes.

Was this the first time submitting the email address to Dominos, or had you used this email address with them previously?

Aha! I got the same email but came straight to my inbox a few weeks ago too!

I also found it weird how it knew my suburb...

I got the same email from 'Mary' saying if I lived in the town. Very creepy and also concerning. I did read here that it was likely coming from this data breach as discussed here https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/97683139/spammers-grab-slice-of-dominos-customers-personal-information

This is why I don't put real name and use a disposable email for things like these.

Ditto here. Has my name and the suburb of the domino's store, not where we live. There was a breach there a few months ago wasn't there?

No, we have used it before over quite a long period (years). However, we only rarely order (probably only four or five times a year) and got this email within half a day of our most recent order. That's either VERY coincidental, or there's still a data breach.

@starkey — thanks for the link; that's the exact issue. If I'd read that first I wouldn't have raised the whole issue all over again :)

It can't be that long ago, because I had it sent to my new ISPs email address which is a disposable one, and I have only had it  for a couple of years.

No point now as they already have your email. In the Stuff article they say they don't have passwords and credit card details though... but hmmm.
