I'm looking to upgrade from a 10 year old Sunbeam coffee machine to a good quality HX or Dual Boiler prosumer type machine, but nowhere seems to sell these machines on special or any discount no matter the price range and if you ask about a discount basically it's a no and take it or leave type attitude. We don't appear to have too much choice here in NZ and shops sell limited brands and different to other shops so even if keen on a particular model you can't really find any other shop to get a better price.

Also even have less choice as would prefer to buy from local area in case of any warranty issues, don't want to be couriering it back and forth etc.

Over in Australia, UK, America they seem to be able to get frequent specials advertised :(

Are people getting any good deals from anywhere on these new machines or basically this is the way, just pay RRP and be happy with the new expensive machine?

Due to not able to get discounts probably now looking at tops 3k which can get you a couple of different Lelit models, maybe a Profitec or Bezza.

What are peoples thoughts?

So go and buy the machine, ask for a discount if they don't then either buy the machine or move on. You can't force a retailer to discount.

Otherwise if another country has specials then import one.

https://www.espresso.co.nz has a wide variety of brands. They have a package discount on most of their brands coffee machine ong with a coffee grinder. I emailed nicely and asked for a diacount about a specific coffee machine they sell but a different grinder I wanted than the one that was offered in the package and they offered 10% discount on the lot.

I ended up buying both the coffee machine and grinder directly from Italy which came out quite a bit cheaper even after paying GST in NZ when it landed.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Unfortunately I already have a good grinder so combo deal no use.

Which site did you buy from in Italy and what sort of percentage did you save?

Did they ship direct, how long did the freight take?

What are you going to do if you have a warranty issue?

Different sales model for those stores I would imagine, and these machines would also not be produced on the scale that your average Breville would, so manufacturing costs would be higher. For the store, this could mean that the mark-up is not very high, and they would not be dependent on moving volume like your mainstream Noel Leeming etc would.

Coffee machines are normally a rather low margin product and products are hard to get into the country thanks to a global pandemic going on.

If you want one, just buy one and move on. No point trying to haggle right now. Else check https://amazon.com.au or Pricespy if you're that keen on saving a couple of bucks.

I'd personally rather have a store to take something back to in-case there is any problems over saving a couple of bucks...

You don't say where you are so it's harder to give good information. I've visited the Espresso Ninja store here in Wellington Espresso Ninja recently and they had specials.

I have a rocket. Really happy with it. Getting to 10 years old now. Pretty close to a commercial machine but has a tank. And not quite the same steaming ability. But other than that fairly similar parts.

Yep. They have an online chat tool on their website during (their) business hours, so ask for a discount code. Can't recall the exact discount off their prices - may have been 10%.

They air freight shipped my machine from Milan via TNT, I think cost was 150 Euro. Delivery took about 10 days, the machine arrived strapped on a wooden pallet - double carton, shrink wrapped. Really very good service at a reasonable price.

Landed cost after paying GST was about 55% of NZ retail for the same machine. It looks like their prices are a bit higher and the exchange rate not as good as when I purchased, but could still be worth it.

I suggest stick with a machine that's commonly available / parts supported in NZ. I have a Rocket, local agent (C4 in Chch) seem to have parts on the shelf, their technician also helpful with DIY part replacement advice.

No. My grinder came with an earthed EU plug. Given a coffee machine has reasonable power draw it's a good idea to change the plug.

The one I got came with a UK (earthed & fused) plug and au/nz adapter. (I cut the UK plug off and replaced with a standard NZ plug, just because the original UK plug and adapter was bulky).

Both times, they discounted from RRP - but it wasn't a 'Briscoes 60% off' discount, nor did I expect one, as I wasn't buying a cheap mass-produced consumer product and I accepted they didn't have the volume or margin to play with.

And for a coffee machine, future serviceability is important for me, so I went for local expertise.

Sometimes you just have to pay what a product is worth.

That was my opinion when I traded In a $1k coffee machine that that could not get parts anymore for a rocket.

And I never looked back.
