I didn't say it wasn't a good idea, just that I want to know beforehand. Sheesh!

I am interested in how you deny ISIS the use of social media.  It's a powerful source of $ and recruits.

ISIS are presumably engaging in hate speech, soliciting murder and all sorts of other crimes.  Most of this is illegal in NZ and many other countries.

Where is the accountability of Facebook, Twitter et al?

Find a way to prosecute them for publishing ISIS's hate speech.  Hammer them with fine, after fine, after until they invest enough moderation resource to deny ISIS a voice on their sites.

Do the same to anyone who hosts ISIS's hate speech and can be reached by a member of a coalition of governments opposed to ISIS.

Then there'd be Aucklanders scattered through out the rest of the country, who the hell wants that?

Stating the obvious - twitter do take down Isis accounts. Although, I see Anonymous have been doing so also. The problem with this approach is that you end up just banning speech itself.

Yes but (stating the obvious) not fast enough.

ISIS seems to create new accounts faster than mods can take them down - which really just means under resourcing of moderation by the website owner.  Just because a free account model is used, does not mean a lower ethical standard should be applied IMO.

And I'm OK with banning particularly offensive speech that incites criminal behaviour or is explicitly bigoted and offensive.

Hate speech is illegal in NZ.  For example, a person was convicted and fined in NZ for something like sending a Muslim family letters with pork in them.

Inciting violence and soliciting murder is illegal in NZ and that is a limitation on free speech.

I didn't say it wasn't a good idea, just that I want to know beforehand. Sheesh!

I recall a cold war era film or TV program which included a line something like "Where do you want to be when the nukes start falling?" to which the reply was "Pissed as a fart and standing underneath the first one!"

And because on the signs above the north side of the Auckland Harbour Bridge it has "North Shore - Major Turn Off" on one which is incredibly adept :-)

This has to be the definitive film on the subject http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0352854/ .

Prosecuting criminal instances and banning are two different things.

You are advocating banning. In practice this requires very strong censorship.

Putting the practicalities aside (even China cannot keep up) there are all kinds of crazy consequences of that.

Isis will attack and kill anyone who does not agree with the bizarre beliefs and commands of Isis. They have killed thousands of Muslims, and will continue to kill and terrorise Muslims. I can't see them stopping. But the reality is they are a symptom of a civil war, not a cause. Likewise their foreign recruits are used for propaganda value.

I've never been nuked, either. We should start a support group.
