Onto another one red onions: Dislike them, can't eat them and food places put raw red onions in so many things even ... sprinkled liberally on top of macaroni and cheese or chicken wings.

(onionism disclaimer: I'm just as annoyed by raw brown or white onions in my food but they seem less prevalent)

Annabel Langbein annoys me.  Well her TV show does anyway.

However for red onion dislikers - here's a tip from one of her shows (now I'm really annoyed, as I've watched enough of a show I don't like to pick up a useful tip).

Dissolve a couple of teaspoons of salt in some warm to hot water in a cup or whatever.  Biff red onion rings in to water and leave 5 minutes.  Remove, rinse, cool, and use as you'd use raw red onion rings.  The sharp/hot "onioniness" is much reduced, they taste quite sweet and flavoursome - even kids may like them.

Right with you there. Can't abide raw onion. I can taste it on anything - cutting boards, knives and so on - that has been used in the preparation of my food and my first question for many dishes is "does it contain onion" - and it goes straight back to the kitchen if they say no and I find it!

It is hardly racism. There is no discrimination on the grounds of race, merely on the inability to speak a language anyone else understands.

um what now?

Fairly simple.

Not employing you because you're French and I hate French people would be racist.

Not employing you because you cannot speak English and the role requires you to do so is not racist.

It is like hiring Manuel in Fawlty Towers.

Precisely, perhaps.  Hiring a German who couldn't speak Spanish to play Manuel proves a point for someone here, I'm just not sure who though...

As long as you don't mention the war. (BTW Andrew Sachs is English)

I mentioned it, but I think I got away with it!

Similar to the onion but worse, when I first came to NZ it took awhile before I realised that they put ham in absolutely EVERYTHING here. Especially those things that shouldn't have it. As a vegetarian I did not appreciate that at all. It's a little better now but I still get caught out occasionally. WTF puts ham into potato salad, or a vegetable quiche, for godsake?

It's not just the flavour, I react badly to them (quite a few people react to raw onions and/or garlic etc).  Even if they are carefully picked out of something enough residue remains to do the damage.  Cooked or pickled are no problem and neither is garlic oil, so I'm guessing it's some sort of protein.

That's culturally problematic for some people to.

What about when people call a call centre and  non Koi Woi accent answers? Please put me to the NZ call centre. Even though this is the NZ call centre armed with quite capable Asians, Indians, and Middle East people. An NZ call centre is NOT where we speak with a  koi woi accint. Its where residents live, work and play.

I used to spend a month every year in the US. When I put stuff on my fork, add mashed tatoes, and something else, the world ended. Sorry, I should eat one particle, on me fork, then on a new movement, another particle. It was actually quite funny at the time. Until I was given full cream that was whiter than white! Cream is not white, unless its not cream. Dairy at times over there ain't dairy.

Americans do have odd table manners.

I have watched adults cut up the food on their plate, put the knife down and then eat it with a fork in one hand used like a shovel. Quite revolting really.

I agree. It is, however, where the staff generally can answer the phone in English...!

Which is the point - not employing someone who cannot meet a reasonable language requirement is not racist, any more than not employing a secretary who cannot type would be. Otherwise, all those ads you see in Te Reo which non-Te Reo speakers cannot read, must by definition be racist....and I am sure no one is about to claim that is the case.

Yes. Also the failure of NZ highways people to use proper reflective road paint when marking white lines, especially in dark rural areas.

When some unknown contractor cuts a chunk out of a footpath that I use regularly and still hasn't re-instated it weeks later. It's just been filled in with gravel.
