We freeze our bread all the time and it is fine. Maybe depends on the bread. We mainly eat whole grains but I would think other breads would also be okay, especially for toast.

McDonald's is running Monopoly again this year, but the instant prizes are now "chance" cards that require an app. The app doesn't seem to be listed in the App Store and clicking the "App Store" button on the McDonald's site just reloads the same page. Yippie.

Oh - thanks for reminding me.  The "whole grain" thing annoys me.

Peasants used to eat whole grains, bran, chaff - all kinds of horrid stuff - for the duration of their short miserable lives.  As soon as industrial farming practices and automated bakeries made decent white crusty bread - the stuff that only the rich used to be able to afford - affordable to the peasants, the scheming barons turned that on it's @rse by telling the peasants not to eat it 'cause it'll kill you.  If true that it'll kill you, then the barons are in cahoots with the gods.  If not, then the whole thing's just a bourgeois conspiracy.

I searched McDonald's Monopoly and it was the first result.

My daylight saving-induced sleep-deprived brain forgot to write the most important part of my post! embarassed

I suspect that the issue is because McDonald's is lying when they say that the app is for "Apple devices" - I bet that they haven't even considered a Mac desktop as being an Apple device. That is what I was supposed to be annoyed at.

It's also interesting that they seem to have limited the game tickets this year a lot more - especially to the things which are bad for you that they presumably sell less of these days, such as fries, hash browns, coke etc most of which now get DOUBLE tickets and things like the ordinary quarter pounder get no tickets at all!

Presumably that's a good way to get the peasants to eat more crap and thereby die earlier.

Supermarket bread specials - "2 loaves for $4" etc (vs one loaf for $3.95 or whatever).

Thawed frozen bread is ghastly, we never eat enough bread to make it worth buying 2 loaves at a time and I don't like throwing food out. This is a marketing fail for Countdown - probably not overall - but for me.  It's one of several reasons I've been going out of my way (travelling further) to do my grocery shopping elsewhere.

Overall, bread quality here is not great in the mainstream. Try buying a stoneground wholemeal organic loaf in Countdown..!

Our local store sells about 90% what we call "white paper bread" with the balance made up of Vogels and a couple of wholemeal attempts by people like Freyas etc. All very airy and insubstantial, I find.

I found a great bread in the US called Dave's Killer Bread. Really tasty, made by a company that mostly employs ex-cons. 21 grains and seeds, organic, widely sold and costs about $5.

Maybe. Wars were quicker - nothing like a shield wall followed by famine for a year or two to winnow out the weaklings!

Dutch bread is fantastic and what I miss. Fortunately we have a local baker who does a reasonable job on German Lekkerbrot and other specialities. If I have to choose from the supermarket, I usually get spelt and rye.

Of course there are people here who think bleached, lifeless, nutrient-deprived, spongy white bread is somehow more refined, which I guess it is, since everything that makes it bread is refined out of it. I still prefer real food. The peasants don't always get it wrong.

Not entirely sure our local shop would be big stockists of spelt and rye..!

I bake my own when I have the time and inclination - I found Hovis Granary and Hovis stoneground wholemeal flour at our local Pak n Save!

We spent 5-6 weeks in a small French village doing a home exchange earlier this year. One of the little highlights - and what we miss now we're home - was their fantastic baguettes that we had for lunch most days.

When we were out and about, we'd drop into a local boulangerie and get a 'sandwich ' of a whole small baguette with ham and cheese or whatever. But the bread itself was so good, you could literally eat it just on its own ... wonderful.

Hard to find bread like that here unfortunately.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

But just think what a fantastic choice of plastic industrial crap fast food we have, Carl's Jr, Wendy's, McDonald's, Burger King, Dominos, Subway, KFC, and  a few more, all next  to each other on the main street in Hastings. I can feel my BMI go up every time I drive through town.
