Its quite unreal. Im not in AKL but i grew up there and have family there, but its unreal. Big rain and floods are one thing but when its one on top of the other, that causes major issues as has played out. Im not a drainage expert but there is need for an LA type waterway with feeder channels. This isn't going away

Handle9: Cool, it’s a Wayne Brown press release.

Facts spoil your narrative?

Nobody even mentioned Brown, but don’t let that stop you….

The picture was in the Sideswipe part of the paper.

That’s the nice thing about a one liner, there’s no narrative just a punch line…

At least flooding around Queen Street may not have been so unexpected.
This below gets extra points for the use of the word 'pestiferous.'

Waihorotiu (from the Māori Wai Horotiu), sometimes called the Waihorotiu Stream and the 'Queen Street River',
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waihorotiu_Stream

""
An open stream in the centre of the road created problems especially in a period before any sewerage system was in operation.
""
Around the middle of the century the Surveyor General Charles Ligar attempted to regulate the stream by building sound walls to constrict its waters (this was referred to as the Ligar Canal).[7] This proved inadequate (being called "an abomination, a pestiferous ditch, and the receptacle of every imaginable filth")[4] and eventually the stream was bricked over in the form of a sewer
""

I've found my new word of the day: pestiferous

I love it. I shall call some of my co-workers that.

I have to say - I am still well and truly over this rain. Summer? Nah, we'll skip summer this year.

Last summer we were dry as a bone and people were complaining too. People were on restricted water usage and all the misery that was caused. This is obviously worse for many reasons, but I recall a summer in Auckland where it rained for 60 days consecutively over the summer. It eventually dried out. It's scary to watch and be involved in though, it's really sad to see so many displaced.

Let's hope he does things differently moving forward.

Heh, at least he apologised. I'll take mistakes and attempt to be better every day of the week.

We all make mistakes but remember people died in these Auckland floods , and in time we'll find out whether his mistakes contributed or not.

Not really sure what you hoped to gain by that comment.

I dont want people to shrug off the deaths as 'a mistake' if it can be shown they could have been avoided.

Then perhaps wait for the enquiry to be completed *first* before making insinuations.

He's already apologised for being slow off the mark so place your bets.

I'd love to know how he can be to blame for the guy who went out on a *Kayak*.

Let's be honest, your comment had nothing to do with the reasons you posted.

I think upgrading storm water infrastructure is one of the waters in 'Three Waters'.  It wasn't too popular - or at least how the Government packaged it and tried to sell it wasn't too popular.  But it does need to be done, along with the other two waters.

In the last couple of years, Auckland (amongst others) has had freshwater shortages (Water #1), sewerage contamination of beaches (Water #2) and massive storm water flooding (Water #3).  I think people should by now at be able to see that the 3 waters need some serious work.  We need to get past the red herrings around co-governance fears etc and get on with some sort of work - whether it's 'Three Waters' or something else.

I'm generally onboard with the Three Waters stuff, but I do understand the concerns around specifically the stormwater. It's such an integral part of the entire city planning with sports fields, parks, wetlands, and so forth all forming part of the planned flooding (Sponge City) strategy that splitting it out of direct council control will be a tough sell. An interesting and tricky problem.
