Modern life.

 

It was by now supposed to be a life of leisure, with robot butlers, flying cars and colonies on the moon.

 

Instead, it's a Pahoehoe flow of endless tedium in which things that should be easy are needlessly complicated by the state, commercial enterprise or both. Opening a bank account - once a simple task involving very little time and effort now requires ludicrous levels of AML compliance, identity verification, tax documentation etc. Changing a flight should be really easy - but today my wife found that an Air NZ flight in a sequence of flights taking her to and from Manchester had been cancelled, leaving her stuck in Melbourne. Almost two hours of mind-numbingly stupid telephone conversations with Etihad in Australia ("It's not an Etihad flight. Phone Air New Zealand" "but I booked it as part of the sequence with you - they are acting as your carrier" etc) was required in order to end up getting her booked on another flight just 30 minutes later. Why not do that as a default position and then tell the customer what you have done and ask them to call if it does not suit?!

 

All of this stuff comes down to one thing I believe. We are now personally "empowered" to do everything which has led to expectation that we WANT to do everything ourselves, are capable of doing so and would like nothing better than to spend our time doing things that companies and governments used to employ people to do. It's created thousands of additional tasks for us every year. No wonder we do not feel that we are living our best Jetsons life.

 

It's a giant version of the loss of secretaries. I used to have a secretary who kept me organised, typed my letters at a ludicrous speed with impressive accuracy and generally kept the plates spinning in the office. I would now be expected to do all of that myself (inefficiently) as well as the actual job for which I am trained and paid.

And it will not end, ol’ boy! What are they supposed to do? They are now the robots who are always more efficient, reachable and retrievable day and night. How are they supposed to know how great it used to be compared to this pathetic hunt for efficiency. And if they don't do it that way, someone else will. Everything is aligning, the individual to the Chinese ant, the character to the opportunist and the friends to be collected by Facebook likes.

It annoys me when people ask technical questions, get a clear answer, and reject it because they claim they know better (usually there's money involved). For example, the most recent is someone who's put twice as much RAM in a computer as it supports, and is getting strange behaviour. Everyone's told this person that there's too much RAM and that it won't work, but this person is adamant that that's not the issue, even going as far as saying "let's pretend that I'm running on a system that does support this much; how would I fix the problem then?"

@Geektastic. I agree with you. We wait, we fill in forms online, we do it umpteen times because of a glitch or it doesn’t like the input. We wait some more for hours to speak to a human, get cut off, rinse and repeat. It’s close to a part time unpaid job that takes up so many hours of my day it frustrates me to the point of procrastination to avoid more of the same.

I guess the young who have grown up with this system assume it’s normal and accept it whereas many of us who lived in the age of service to customers and the public, get irritated.

My peeve is walking into a shop on impulse and buying a number of clothing items, paying and being handed them in a pile to walk out with unless I pay for a bag. Geez put a few cents on the price of everything and just provide some wrapping. Looking at you Cotton On Kids.

Manchester and London have a lot of flight cancellations at present because of baggage issues. Mine are leaving tomorrow with Etihad for London then Europe. I pity them.

I've noticed recently that it's like the bad old days again. For several years we used to get movies on the same date as the US, but now they're often delayed by a month or more. Amazon US has had a few more orders from me recently...

 

On the other hand it can sometimes be a bit of a coup, like when I played the HBO Max version of Dune for movie night last year, six weeks before the local cinema got it.

I probably could get it from Amazon and it'd be here quicker than from JB hifi with those times, though by the time its converted to NZ$, postage added, gst added...

 

OTOH JB AU is $37, JB NZ a ridiculous $49 for 4K, so I'll be waiting for those to drop anyway.

 

And then there's Top Gun Maverick at some point...

I don't think it's purely a dollar or cents issue. In my opinion it's a woke way of saying "We're environmentally aware and are saving the world one bag at a time".

I don't think it's purely a dollar or cents issue. In my opinion it's a woke way of saying "We're environmentally aware and are saving the world one bag at a time".

 

 

In the UK it resulted in an 86% reduction in the use of plastic bags. So woke.

Plastic bags aren't the real issue, it's what careless people do with those bags afterwards is the problem. Just look at the pollution problem with face masks.

No one is asking for a plastic bag to wrap purchases in.

Frankly I don’t care if they wrap it in yesterday’s newspaper and tape it up. Just put what I buy in something. They could have a roll of paper or use paper bags. Walking out of a shop with six knickers, some socks and a couple pairs of pyjamas and a few clips and a drink bottle and they just hand it to you in a pile and stuff is dropping everywhere. I now choose shops that wrap.

For me, banks and insurance companies are state-legitimised robber barons and highwaymen, and as such I have always politely avoided them wherever possible. Honestly, who in history has paid penalty interest on their own money?

I agree. I don't need a plastic bag, just some way to carry the stuff I have purchased in a dignified manner. Once upon a time bags were seen as a great way to get your customers to promote your brand by carrying your name on a bag as they walked down the street, on the bus or train etc.
