Fred99:
Would you dispute that much of what we call "morality" is based on suppressing *innate behaviour?
* I've said innate, but feel free to substitute with original sin or whatever else you like to explain why people without rules or morals trend to run amok.
I'm not denying what you are saying. But my opinion of the majority of the human race leans more towards the good than the evil.
We have already discussed that nobody here is suppressing anything. There is a difference between having a view on whats moral, and forcing your morals on someone else. Forcing morals does not have its place anymore.
Fred99:
Public executions - in the past and where still practiced now - are terrifically popular events. Please don't tell me that people flock to witness these with the intent to be miserable or complacent.
It's a dark side of human nature (IMO) that we should be aware of and act against.
Where these public executions have happened, have they really been about the dark side of the human race? Or have they been about a bigger evil? Ie. Witnessing Justice maybe?
IMO People don't flock to executions (And I don't believe they ever have), to glee at death. Sure there are the extremes, but I am talking about the majority of people. It does not matter where you are from, your religion, or even your upbringing. Chances are its human nature to help, be good, be kind, rather than show violence (or glee to see it). Innocent child being hurt? People will mostly help, it does not matter what child it is. Why? Because I like to believe people are focused more on whats good, than whats evil. Thats my opinion of human nature.
Anyway, back to flocking to public executions etc.. Yes it happens. But maybe the real question is Why?
Because even though these things are evil, people may have justified them as good.
Do some reading into the Salem witch trials. Terrible things were done to these people (witches) in public. Were people flocking and eager to witness these brutal killings? Of course they were. But all of those people really believed they were witnessing the killings of real witches. So were these people evil? Or were the witches evil? Were they displaying a dark side of the human race, or were they maybe just confused about what they were doing? I have thought this over many times in the past. It comes down to whats good and evil. Is there really such a thing?
Another question then. Innate behavior, or human nature. Is it good or evil. And what defines it?
Your human nature may be different to mine. Is it an absolute?
Edit: Another example. Mob justice.
Where the rules of law disappear, why do these mobs form? They take justice into their own hands. People are afraid of these mobs. They murder people who rape, kill children etc. Are they evil? Or are the good? Dark side of human nature? Or the good side?
